Abstract

1375437 Fuel cell batteries SIEMENS AG 21 Feb 1972 [25 Feb 1971] 7933/72 Heading H1B The pressure drops between the inlet and outlet ends of a number of fuel cells 5 connected across a main electrolyte inlet passageway 3 and a main electrolyte outlet passageway 4 are rendered more equal to tend to equalize the electrolyte flows through the individual cells by making the cross-sectional area of the passageway 3 smaller that that of the passageway 4 at the pairs of locations where the respective cells are connected by conduits 6 to the passageways. The passageways 3, 4 may be of uniform crosssection along their length; preferably, however, the passageway 3 decreases in cross-sectional area and the passageway 4 increases in crosssectional area, in the direction of electrolyte flow. These changes in cross-section may be abrupt or gradual. Further, the conduits 6 may have different cross-sections to additionally improve the flow equalization. The electrolyte supply may be connected to opposite ends of the battery, Fig. 1a, or the same end, Fig. 1b. Fig. 3 shows a pair of cells forming part of a stack having a main inlet passageway 12 and a main outlet passageway 13 of greater crosssection, each cell having an electrolyte chamber 16 and a pair of gas chambers 19.
