1352554 Anvil and cartridge assembly UNITED STATES SURGICAL CORP 20 April 1971 [27 April 1970] 19160/73 Divided out of 1352553 Heading A5R The subject matter of the Specification is the same as Specification 1,352,553 except that the claims relate to an anvil and cartridge assembly (110), Fig. 8 (not shown), for use with a surgical ligating and severing instrument, which comprises a pair of parallel rails (158) Fig. 11 (not shown), spaced from one another and terminating in upstanding anvil portions 120, a carriage 112 slidably mounted on the rails and movable from a retracted position to an advanced position in which a front face 154 on the carriage is located close to the anvil portions for clamping a tubular organ 250 to be ligated thereagainst at least one pair of wire ligatures 128 carried by the carriage each in alignment with each anvil portion, a pusher assembly 122, 124 movably mounted in the carriage and adapted to eject ligatures therefrom towards the anvil portions, a knife blade 134 mounted in the carriage between the rails and being movable relative to the carriage in a direction parallel with the rails for severing the ligated organ, and tissue rejecting means 160 operable after the ligating and severing operations to eject the organ parts from the anvil portions. The assembly (110) comprises three plastics sections 112, 114, 116 and a pair of ligature-carrying cylinders 118 each containing a plurality of ligatures. A counter (216), Fig. 8 (not shown), serves to indicate the number of ligature pins remaining in the cylinders 118.
