Abstract

1341693 Minimising fires in tanks DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 13 Jan 1971 [22 Jan 1970] 3164/70 Heading A5A The risk of fire or explosion in a container for inflammable fluids, e.g. an aircraft fuel tank 11, is reduced by providing pieces of openly reticulated foam 14 which are unattached on to another or to the contanier and which leave externally of the pieces a free volume of 10-15% of the interior volume of the container. The foam pieces may be balls of metal or plastics, particularly polyurethane ester and/or Viton (R.T.M.), or nitrile foam, and may be hollow. The container may also have a layer of the foam covering at least part of its exterior surface. The foam pieces minimise surge by providing free flow passages for the fluid.
