Abstract

1338384 All-dielectric waveguides POST OFFICE 16 Dec 1970 [17 Dec 1969] 61589/69 Heading H1W A dielectric waveguide for propagation of the HE 11 electromagnetic mode comprises a core 1 of polymeric material of a loss angle not greater than 50 Á radians and of a diameter between 0À5 # 0 and 0À85 # 0 (# 0 is free-space wavelength), a support 2 surrounding the core and consisting of foamed polymeric material having a dielectric constant substantially equal to unity and having an outer diameter between 1À6 # 0 and 5À0 # 0 , and a jacket 3, 4 providing protection against mechanical stress and moisture and also providing electrical screening. The core and the support may both be of polypropylene. The core may be a solid rod or may consist of foamed or stranded material. The jacket may consist of a layer of carbon 3 and an outer layer of a suitable polymer. The guide is formed by a precision extrusion process. The advantageous properties of the construction are described in detail in the Specification.
