Abstract

1338021 Electro-medical apparatus S C I SYSTEMS Inc 19 April 1971 [12 Feb 1970] 21688/71 Heading G1N In a physiological monitoring system, e.g. an ECG or EEG recorder, a patient 32 is prevented from receiving electric shocks by connecting a full-wave diode bridge rectifier 14 between the ground of the instrument 28 and the patient and applying a steady state current of about 10 micro amps to the bridge so that for currents between the patient and ground of less than the current supply value, the rectifier presents a relatively low impedance, but for currents above said value it presents a high impedance, thereby protecting the patient. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), two current sources 12 are connected in series with their junction connected to the ground of the instruments, and more than one patient can be protected by the same rectifier.
