1320575 Mixing apparatus, comminuting apparatus W EIRICH and G EIRICH 6 Aug 1970 [16 Aug 1969 22 Jan 1970] 37998/70 Headings B1C and B2A [Also in Division B5] Mixing apparatus comprises a rotatable cylindrical container 1 having a discharge opening 4, and two different mixing tools in the container, one of which is not shown and the other 5 of which is mounted for rotation about an axis eccentric to the axis of the container, the latter tool comprising a disc 7 carried by the free end of a drive shaft 6 and itself carrying radially extending vanes 8 spaced from the axis of the drive shaft. An annular element may be positioned on top of the vanes (Fig. 2, not shown). Radially-curved ribs may be arranged on the disc to create centrifugal flow (Fig. 3, not shown). The firstmentioned tool may have four arms, each carrying at its free end an adjustable blade or knife, optionally arranged at a different height above the bottom of the container (Fig. 3, not shown). The container may be rotated about an axis inclined to the vertical, and a deflector may be arranged therein (Fig. 4, not shown). The vanes may be coated with a wear-resistant material. The container may be open or covered, and, in the latter event, it may be connected to pressure reducing means. It may also be provided with holes in its wall through which air can be drawn by suction for cooling and/or drying purposes (Fig. 6, not shown). Material may be introduced into the container through a tube arranged coaxially about the drive shaft, and optionally secured to the vanes, (Fig. 7, not shown). The tool 5 may be arranged concentrically within a tool of like construction, the drive shaft of the outer tool passing through the hollow drive shaft of the inner tool, one tool being driven in a direction opposite to the other (Fig. 8, not shown). The vanes may be fixed to the underside of the disc, and the drive shaft may be hollow for purposes of introducing gases or liquids into the material being mixed (Fig. 9, not shown). Alternatively, the vanes may project from both sides of the disc (Fig. 10, not shown). The apparatus may be used inter alia for mixing plastic or liquid masses, cooling moulding sand, and pulverising asbestos.
