Abstract

1295091 Electric couplings &c. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES Ltd 13 Feb 1970 [14 Feb 1969] 8204/69 Heading H2E A cable joint comprises a joint sleeve 5 and a hollow member 7 which is sealed by cast resin 18 to the sheath of the cable 1 and to the joint sleeve, the hollow member passing just inside the joint sleeve and being filled with cast resin via the hole 8. The resin is preferably a coldsetting acrylic casting resin and where the hollow member, sleeve and sheath are PVC and/or metal resins as described in the Specification are preferred. The walls 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 &c. are built up of flexible sheet material which may be porous polythene. To obtain better adhesion of the resin to the sheath, a band of suitable material, e.g. a polythene/aluminium foil laminate for a polythene sheath, may be instead secured in place, e.g. by welding with hot copper binding wires. During assembly split polythene tubes 16, 17 are used to retain the resin during the casting operation, being removed after the resin has set. The opening(s) 19 may be provided in the joint sleeve to pressurize, evacuate or introduce insulated fillings in the duct. In a breeches joint the end of the hollow member which is attached to the sheath is provided with the required number of apertures.
