Abstract

1294173 Coating compositions IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 May 1971 [2 June 1970] 26562/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division B2] Coating compositions comprise: (a) a white pigment extender, particularly china clay; (b) a synthetic latex as sole binding agent; (c) an optical brightening agent, particularly one containing one or two heterocyclic nuclei directly attached to one or more aromatic or other heterocyclic nuclei; (d) a non-ionic surfactant, e.g. a polymer of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide, or a condensate of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide with an alcohol, alkylphenol or fatty acid, particularly a condensate with a polyhydric alcohol or an ether or ester of such a condensate; and (e) water. In examples the latex is of carboxylate d styrene / butadiene, methylmethacrylate / butadiene or styrene/acrylate, and the compositions also contain a dispersant, e.g. the sodium salt of a synthetic polycarboxylic acid, sodium hexametaphosphate or tetrasodium pyrophosphate, and aqueous ammonia to give an alkaline pH.
