Abstract

1286272 Methyl methacrylate polymer sheet ROHM & HAAS CO 9 Sept 1969 [16 Sept 1968] 44487/69 Heading C3P Acrylic sheet is formed from a polymer containing at least 90% by weight of bulk polymerized methyl methacrylate, the polymer either being a linear polymer having an average molecular weight (determined by an intrinsic viscosity method) of 250,000 to 450,000, or being a slightly cross-lined polymer such that the sheet has a 30-second modulus (determined by a specified method) equivalent to the above molecular weight range, of 50-120 lb./sq. inch at 180‹ C. A preferred polymer contains 0-5% by weight of polymerized ethyl acrylate, 0-5% by weight of polymerized ethylthioethyl methacrylate, and 90-100% by weight of polymerized methyl methacrylate. If cross-linked the polymer may be bulk polymerized with up to 0À5% by weight of a polyethylenically unsaturated comonomer. The sheet may be formed by in situ bulk polymerization, or by another method such as casting in solution or extruding.
