Abstract

1,264,857. Hip joint prosthesis. A. H. HUGGLER and B. G. WEBER. 24 April, 1969 [25 April, 1968], No. 21061/69. Heading A5R. A hip joint prothesis comprises a tang 9 to be secured in the femur, a cylindrical spigot 8 on the tang, a part spherical capitulum 5 having a spigot receiving socket 7 and being rotatably mounted on the spigot, and a spacer sleeve 6 rotatably mounted on the spigot between the capitulum and tang, the tang and spigot being of inert metal, the capitulum and spacer sleeve being of inert plastics. The spigot has a plane end face 12 against which the capitulum bears, the radius of curvature of the edge between the plane face 12 and the cylindrical surface of the spigot (R, Fig. 3 not shown) being greater than the radius of curvature (r) in the corresponding transition in the capitulum. The spigot has a shoulder 17 which takes part of the load transmitted via the spacer ring 6 when the capitulum deforms under exceptionally heavy loads, but normally is spaced from the spacer ring by a few hundredths of a millimeter. Eye 19 is accurately machined to receive a tool to assist in mounting the head in a femur. Lubrication of the bearing surfaces is aided by bore 14 and groove 15 in the capitulum and spacer ring and a further groove in shoulder 17. A prosthetic socket 1 of inert metal having ribs 2 and flange 3 may be provided.
