[Also in Division A5] An innocuous surgical sewing thread is produced by coating a clean dry thread, e.g. nylon with a hydrophilic polymer (i.e. one which when in equilibrium with water contains from 20-80% by volume water) of "glycerol" or "glycol" mono-methacrylate or mono-acrylate (where glycerol means glycerine, mannitol or pentaerythritol and glycol means any watersoluble aliphatic diol such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, and ethylene glycol-propylene glycol co-polycondensates). The polymer may contain a minor amount of glycerol or glycol dimethacrylate or diacrylate as a crosslinking agent. The coating may be produced either by cross-linking a monomer mixture directly onto the thread, or by applying a solution of a soluble non-crosslinked polymer and subsequently evaporating the solvent and, if desired, cross-linking. A biologically active substance, i.e. antiseptic, antibiotic, antibacterial &c. may be incorporated into the thread in various ways depending upon the desired rate at which the substance is to be liberated, e.g. the drug may be imbibed in a solution by the untreated thread which is subsequently coated or the drug may be added to the monomer mixture prior to polymerisation, or the finished and sterilised thread may be immersed in a solution of the drug. Polyamide threads may be coated in this way.
