Abstract

1,238,503. Fuses. NITRO NOBEL A.B. 18 July, 1968 [20 July, 1967], No. 34201/68. Heading F3A. A fuse for propagating a gaseous pressure wave front for ignition of an explosive material, comprises a tubular casing having a quantity of an ignitable substance distributed along the inner wall of the casing or on the surface of an element extending in the longitudinal direction of the casing, and an open channel for the passage of gas formed inside the casing and extending the length of the fuse, the ignitable substance being present in an amount less than 0À5 gms/inch length of casing and serving to add energy to the pressure wave to compensate for energy losses upon being ignited by hot compressed gas following the pressure wave front. The casing is made of polyvinyl chloride or paper reinforced " Bakelite" (Registered Trade Mark) and has a number of alternative cross-sectional configurations (Figs. 4-9, not shown). The ignitable substance is a liquid explosive or a solid explosive powder which can be retained by a layer of petroleum jelly. The explosive is selected from PETN, RDX, HMX, TNT, dinitroethyl urea or tetryl. The gaseous pressure wave is derived from a detonator or a spark generated between electrodes extending through the fuse casing.
