An egg carton made of bi-axially oriented polystyrene and having a number of compartments 30 has a channel shaped inwardly opening pocket 26 in each compartment and a rib 36 extending into the compartment from the main wall of each pocket and engaging the egg. The pockets 26 and inverted complementary portions 24 provide lateral cushioning means. The base of each compartment has a stepped formation, Fig. 11, to resist shocks and also has formations 38a, 38b, 38c forming stacking means. A lid may be sealed across the top of the carton and have perforations to facilitate its removal, alternatively, the flat lid can be located on studs protruding from the top of the carton the studs being then deformed to prevent tampering. The tray and cover may be separately or integrally formed and the cover may be compartmented and constructed in the same manner as the tray portion. If due to the taper of the carton its top section is too wide for package in the usual cases a notch 78 can be provided at each end of the carton whereby the carton can be deformed from the dotted to full line position shown in Fig. 19, the lid being secured after the carton has been deformed and thereby maintaining the narrower section. Portions (22a, Fig. 11A) between the compartments 30 may be upwardly curved or may be upwardly shaped pyramids to stiffen the carton. The tray and lid may be transparent.
