[Also in Division B2] A tufted carpeting comprises a primary scrim 12 through which a pile layer 10 has been needled to form tufts, a non-jute woven secondary scrim 52 adhesively bonded to the primary scrim by a rubber latex layer 16, and a backing layer 24, 66 of embossed latex foam rubber from the surface of which air bubbles have been substantially removed. The pile layer may comprise fibre bundles or yarns. The secondary scrim 52 may be of cotton, polyester or glass cloth. The initial latex layer 16 may be applied in amount 8-16 oz./sq. yd. and may be based on a butadiene/styrene/methocrylic or itaconic acid copolymer latex and whiting, with various specified additives. The backing foam may be a composition based on natural and/or butadiene-styrene rubber latices and whiting and may be foamed by whipping in air and applied in amount 4-8 oz. (dry)/sq. yd. by spraying or by a bar or roller. Embossing may form the backing foam to a depth of 1/16-1/8inch under 1-10 p.s.i. pressure, thereby removing surface air bubbles. The foam is subsequently cured, e.g. by heat: curing agents or acceleraters, e.g. acid salts, and other specified additives, may be incorporated in the composition. The foam may be gelled before embossing, e.g. at 100-150‹C. In the example, the carpeting is formed continuously.
