[Also in Division B4] A surgical stapler for effecting anastomoses comprises a body 1 rigidly secured to an extension tube 2 (e.g. by means of a union nut-see Fig. 10, not shown) and a coupled actuating handle 4. A replaceable stapling head 6 is attached to the end of the extension tube, e.g. by a union nut 5, and an end piece 23 which provides the stapling anvil is replaceably, e.g. threadedly, attached to a central stem 23 which passes axially through the centre of the tube 22 and stapling head 6. As shown in Fig. 2, the stem 22 passes centrally through the stapling head inside a tube 23 which moves to actuate the ejector 10 and the circular knife 20 (also replaceable). The body of the stapling head 6 is attached to the extension tube by means of a union nut 5 threaded onto the tail piece 14 and a key 16 which cooperates with slots in the stem 22, tube 23 and body 6 serves to maintain the whole of the stapling head and end-piece in the correct alignment. The end piece 23 comprises a threaded piece 25 which screws on to the stem and supports the piece 26 to which it is attached and which contains a resilient annular member 31 on which the knife blade 20 rests at the end of the stapling movement and an anvil 33 against which the staples are forced and are appropriately bent.
