A flowbox comprises an enclosed explosion chamber (135) of rectangular cross-section, having a stock inlet (134) and outlet (136) disposed in opposed walls and each of smaller cross-section than the explosion chamber, and an imperforate baffle plate (144) dividing the chamber in two. As shown, a wire 10 carries a dewatered web from the first stage of a twinwire board-making machine, over rolls 11 and 12. An upper wire 13 passes round roll 15 to form a convergent gap 20 with the wire 10. Stock is fed to this gap from a cross-machine header 131, through ducts (only one shown at 133) and a header tank 132 with an overflow chamber 152. Two sets of narrow parallel tubes 134a and 134b, preferably shew to one another (Fig. 2, not shown) fed the explosion chamber 135, and the outlet 136 leads to a slice 139. The plates 140 and 141 forming this outlet may be adjusted to vary its size. In a modification (Fig. 3, not shown), the baffle is inclined, so that the subchambers on either side are of convergent section. The carriers of the chamber may be rounded by suitable inserts.
