A graft polymer is prepared by reacting at a temperature of between- 90‹ and + 70‹ C. a cationically polymerizable monomer with a halogenated polymeric macromolecule, the macromolecule having at least 0À01 mol per cent of allylic halogen, tertiary halogen or benzylic halogen atoms or combinations thereof, in the presence of an A1M z R co-catalyst where M is a C 1 to C 12 -alkyl radical and R is M, hydrogen or halogen, whereby the macromolecule acts as co-catalyst and also becomes the backbone of said graft polymer. The examples illustrate the grafting of (a) styrene, p-chlorostyrene, alpha-methyl styrene or chloroprene on to chlorobutyl rubber using AlEt 2 Cl or AlEt 3 as catalyst, (b) styrene on to chlorinated ethylene-propylene rubber, polyvinyl chloride or polychloroprene using AlEt 2 Cl as catalyst, (c) isobutylene on to polyvinyl chloride or polychloroprene using AlEt 2 Cl as catalyst and (d) isobutylene and isoprene on to polychloroprene using AlEt 2 Cl as catalyst. Other graft monomers specified include butadiene, piperylene and vinyl alkyl ethers. The grafting process is carried out in an inert organic diluent. The graft polymer of isobutylene on polychloroprene which is produced in Example 19 is cured.
