[Also in Division A2] A cigarette paper in the piece or cigarette paper forming part of or being rolled into a cigarette has a reinforcing network produced by applying a network of fine lines of a non- combustible material capable of being shrunk to the cigarette paper and processing the applied network to cause it to shrink so that each paper enclave in the network bulges slightly. The non-combustible material may be a liquid containing material capable of shrinking by drying; or a material capable of shrinking by heating. The network may be applied as a whole to one or both sides of the cigarette paper in the piece, or the paper forming part of, or being rolled into a cigarette. The network may be applied in two separate operations consisting in applying the x lines of the network in one operation and y lines of the network in another operation. The two operations may be applied to the paper in the piece on one side only or one operation is applied on each side or both operations are applied on both the sides. The network mesh side may be between 1 and 3 millimeters in length. The non-combustible material may be a mixture comprising 20 to 30% of a non combustible substance e.g. sodium silicate; 20 to 30% water; 10 to 20% of a substance with vitrifying properties e.g. gum arabic; 1 to 5% of a substance with flexing properties e.g. glycerine; 15 to 30% of a combustion-retarding substance with binding properties e.g. talc; and 1 to 5% of a colouring or whitening agent e.g. zinc oxide or titanium white. The cigarette may comprise a filter tip at one end while the other end is a converging funnel empty of tobacco or both ends may be converging funnels empty of tobacco. The or each funnel may consist of the folded-in end portion of the rolled paper tube of the cigarette and the or each funnel may be consolidated by impregnation with a hardening material such as starch. A free space at the open end or both open ends of a cigarette for the tobacco therein, formed with or without a filter tip and with a tube longer than required may be formed by compressing or removing the tobacco so as to leave a free space; the end portion or portions of the tube which is or are empty of tobacco may be folded-in to form the funnel.
