Abstract

1,160,431. Ear defenders. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 18 July, 1967 [4 May, 1966] No. 19684/66. Heading H4J. A cover type ear defender has a shell 12 and an annular seating 11 for sealing around the outer ear. A microphone 17 is mounted externally on the shell 12 and is connected through an amplifier 18 to an earphone 14 within the shell 1.2. The amplifier 18 is arranged to have a limiting characteristic whereby sounds of intensity up to the region of 90 dB. above 0À0002 dynes/cm.2 are transmitted with a linear response, but above that region are limited to a safe peak level. The region of linear response preferably has an overall acoustic gain of unity. In general one defender for each ear is supported on a sprung type head band. The seating 11 is liquid filled. A resilient earphone mounting 13 is provided, together with plastics foam filling 15. A rear enclosure 16 has an aperture for a battery lead 19 and a pressure balancing hole 20. Bandwidth may be restricted to discriminate against sounds of particular frequency content.
