A wound edge protector comprises two resilient rings 12, 14 and a flexible sheet material 16 formed into a substantially tubular shape, each ring being connected to an end of the tube, the material of the protector being sterilisable, and at least the outer surface of the protector being non-irritating to wounds. The protector, which may be of oval or circular form, may be placed in a wound or incision (Figures 6, 13, not shown) to protect the edges of the wound and to hold the wound open and may be provided in a collapsed and sterile form (Figure 3, not shown) in a sealed pack. In an embodiment (Figures 8-14, not shown), the protector is adjustable in diameter, the rings each being formed by joining together the ends of rod members either by a telescopic joint (Figure 14, not shown) or by clips (Figure 12, not shown). The protector may be partially inverted (Figure 7, not shown) to cover the surface of the wound. The protector may be formed from exemplified plastics materials.
