An expendable electro-phoresis test kit, for separating components of a mixture, e.g. containing proteins, peptides or amino acids, particularly to identify individual isozymes of lactate dehydrogenase, comprises a plastic chamber having therein a pair of spaced buffer solution vessels 24, 26 or 66, 68 each containing an electrode 34 or 70, and a plastic retaining lid 20 for positioning a buffered support medium 46 in electrical contact between the buffer solution vessels, e.g. in reservoir 42 defined by peripheral lid wall 44. The support medium containing the material to be electro-phoretically separated may be gel, filter paper or cellulose acetate. The electrodes may be of foil 34 Fig. 3 or of nichrome or Pt wire 70 Fig.8 and connected up to a D. C. source. The buffer solution vessels 24, 26 may be suspended from the chamber walls 16 and supported on pads 28 Fig. 3, or the vessels 66, 68 may be defined by divider walls 62, 64 integral with the chamber walls 60. A sponge wick 40 may be provided in each of the buffer solution vessels. An ice pack may be positioned upon the kit to dissipate heat generated within the chamber.
