[Also in Division B4] A surgical instrument for suturing body tubes with a circular pattern of staples comprises a hollow body 1 containing an elongate member 10 sliding in a tubular member 4, the member 4 carrying a cylindrical cutting blade 6 and staple ejecting means 9 and the member 10 being fastened to a detachable head member 12 against which the staples are ejected. In use, the body 1 and head 12 are inserted into the body tubes to be joined and the ends of the tubes are directed inwardly to the space 15 between the head 12 and the body 1. Arms 2, 3 are then manipulated to move the member 4 to staple the tubes together and to remove excess tissue with the blade 6. A nut 20 is threaded on to the member .10 and may be rotated to move the head 12 relative to the body 1 to adjust the size of the space 15. The head 12 is detachably held to the member 10 by a nut 13 having a blunt end 14 and the member 10 has a pointed end 11 so that, with the head removed, the member 10 may be pushed through body tissue. The head 12 may be inserted into one of the tubes to be sutured together while either separate or attached to the body 1 of the instrument.
