Apparatus used to inject a series of separate doses of an X-ray contrast agent into the blood stream comprises a plunger 6 moving in a syringe 1 to administer the contrast agent via a tube 2 and a catheter, the plunger being driven by compressed air acting on a piston 7 and 'being linked to rotate a programming disc 14 which controls the intermittent advance of the piston. As shown, the apparatus includes a compressed air supply 19, a device 22 which dampens sudden impulses of pressure, an excess pressure valve 16 actuated by a sensor 25, and a contact member 32 which is actuated by notches 30, 31 on the contoured programming disc 14 to close valves 3, 4 and 17 in the supply of air to the piston 7 and stop the injection of the contrast agent. A timing circuit (not shown) opens the valve 17 after a chosen time and the compressed air then causes the disc 14 to resume rotation, the contact member 32 to move out of a notch 30, 31, and further contrast agent to 'be injected. Photographic exposures may be made immediately after or during each injection.
