An expanding pulley gear has a V-belt 2 with an asymmetric cross-section and correspondingly shaped driving and driven pulleys 3, 1, the former of which is an expanding pulley having a substantially flat (1 degree out of the vertical plane) pulley flange 3 secured to a bush (11) (Fig. 3, not shown), fast with a shaft 5 of an electric motor 1<SP>1</SP>, and a substantially conical (e.g. spherically crowned cone) pulley flange 4 axially slidably arranged on the bush (11), the flange 4 being spring- loaded at 10 towards flange 3 and further urged theretowards, under torque loading, by rollers 8, carried by the bush (11), engaged in cam surfaces 7 formed on a hub 6 of the movable flange 4. The motor 1<SP>1</SP> is arranged on on adjustable slide or a hinged plate whereby the speed ratio of the pulley gear may be varied. The V-belt 2, which has one sideflank flat on an incline up to 1 degree and the other side-flank inclined at approximately 19 degrees, may be a toothed belt and has a height to width ratio of 1 to 1 up to, 1 to 3 and is provided with cord reinforcements. The pulley flanges are formed of self-hardening, wear-resisting aluminium alloy having a good thermal conductivity, and the bush (11) is of bronze.
