Abstract

An explosive composition free from nitro-cellulose is made by mixing a liquid nitric acid ester and/or a liquid aromatic nitro-compound with a gelatinizing or plasticizing agent consisting of one or more high polymers free from nitro groups and perchlorate groups. Suitable polymers or copolymers are obtained from unsaturated acids, their esters and anhydrides, unsaturated alcohols, their esters and ethers, unsaturated ketones and acetals, and condensation products of aldehydes and phenols and of diols and dicarboxylic acids. Several examples of such polymers are given. In examples the nitric esters and nitro-compounds are nitroglycerine, nitroglycol, nitroglycerine - nitroglycol mixture, diethyl glycol dinitrate, and a liquid mixture of isomeric dinitrotoluenes; the polymers and copolymers are polymethacrylic acid, polyvinyl acetate, a copolymer of ethyl acrylate and vinyl chloride, phenol-formaldehyde resin, and polyvinyl pyrrolidone or a copolymer thereof with vinyl acetate.
