An insulated cargo container 11 is provided with openings 38, 41 in its walls, removable plugs 39, 42 for the openings of a fan 97 disposed adjacent opening 38. When a plurality of such containers are carried in the hold of a ship (Figs. 7 and 8, not shown) having air circulating and refrigerating means (92, 94) the fans 97 are energized and plugs 39, 42 may be removed to allow the fans to circulate ambient refrigerated air through the containers. In transit to and from the ship the containers are sealed by insertion of the plugs and may be cooled by a refrigeration machine which is inserted in an aperture in a wall of the container (Fig. 4, not shown) and is removed on arrival. While being stored prior to loading on to the ship the containers may be supplied with refrigerated air from a central refrigerating plant via flexible ducting connected to the openings in their walls (Fig. 6, not shown). The containers (Fig. 3, not shown) have end doors (43, 44) which are provided with further openings (52, 53). Heaters may be provided within the containers.
