Abstract

1,085,565. Electric motors. WOODS OF COLCHESTER Ltd. June 25, 1964 [June 27, 1963], No. 25699/63. Heading H2A. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A helico-centrifugal fan has a secondary centrifugal impeller within the inner diameter of the main impeller to provide a secondary gas current. In the fan shown, comprising an impeller disc 15 carrying helico-centrifugal blades 16 and a shroud 19, centrifugal blades 23 carried by the disc 15 provide an auxiliary circulation as shown by arrows 20, whereby gas is drawn at 21 from the main flow 17 and flows through an annular space 22 or channels in the motor housing to cool the driving motor 11, returning to the main flow at 24. Cooling fins may be provided on the motor carcase. The auxiliary circulation re-energizes the boundary layer adjacent the inner wall 25 of the main flow duct to prevent it from thickening and slowing down. Fan noise may be reduced by perforating the inner and outer walls 25, 26 and providing sound-damping material such as slag wool or glass fibre within chambers 27, 28.
