Abstract

The invention comprises polyesters derived from 1: 4, 3: 6-dianhydro-iditol, mannito and sorbitol. Acids which may be used for the esterification are carbonic, malonic, succinic, adipic, iso- and terephthalic, galactaric and sebacoic. Ester-forming derivatives of these, e.g. chlorides and methyl, ethyl and phenyl esters, may also be used. The reaction may be carried out in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. stannous phosphide, calcium acetate, Sb2O3, SbF3 or litharge, and glycols or carboxylic acids having a basicity greater than 2 may be added. The anhydrohexitol may de-cyclize during the reaction resulting in crosslinking and this may be brought about by the HCl eliminated if an acid chloride or phosgene is used. The products may be linear and fibre-forming. In the examples polymerization is carried out under N2.
