A yarn or tow 14 of filaments of cellulose ester, regenerated cellulose, a polyester, a polyolefin, or nylon, is fed through passageway 13 into compression crimping chamber 11 by means of fluid from jet 10. The plug of compressed yarn passes into chamber 17 formed by guides 18 spaced around the crosssection of the chamber thus allowing heated air or other gas, or saturated or superheated steam from tube 31 to pass through the plug to set the crimp in the yarn. The exit of the plug of yarn from chamber 17 may be unobstructed as shown, or obstructed by a pair of rollers (44), (45), Fig. 8 (not shown), by rollers as described in Specification 722,966, by a single roll, by reducing the cross-section of the exit tube, or by roughening the surface thereof. The yarn passes through a comb and is wound under suitable conditions of tension, temperature, and relative humidity temporarily to remove the crimp from the yarn, the crimp being restored by subsequent treatment with steam or hot water or by dipping into a scouring or dyeing bath. The yarn may be preheated as by the fluid from jet 10 which may be air or steam, and/or by passing the yarn through pipe (58), Fig. 11 (not shown) through which hot vapour or gas is passed, or by passing the yarn over a heated surface. In other modifications, setting chamber 17 may be electrically heated, an auxiliary heated fluid may be fed into a tubular passageway (42), Fig. 6 (not shown), between passageway 13 and chamber 11, chamber 11 may have an initial zone of greater cross-sectional area, Fig. 7 (not shown), the region between jet 10 and passageway 13 may be enclosed apart from a yarn entry aperture to reduce fluid loss from jet 10, and the plug of compressed yarn may be forwarded through setting chamber 17 under controlled speed by means of pins extending through a slot into the chamber and mounted on a belt, or if chamber 17 is semicircular on wheel (62), Fig. 9 (not shown).
