An intra-uterine device of a resiliently flexible plastics material is formed as a helical coil having at each end a substantially closed oblong loop 1, 2, the coil being slightly flattened transverse to its axis. As shown, the major diameter of the loop 2 is larger than that of the loop 1 and the device is formed from a single length of plastics wire. In embodiments, the device is moulded and the loops 1, 2 are completely closed. The loops may be formed with bulbous ends (Figure 6, not shown) to avoid providing a sharp projection and the gauge of the material forming the loop may be half that of the helical coil. The plastics material may comprise polyethylene or polypropylene containing an X-rayopaque barium compound and the device may be provided with an integral or attached tail to facilitate removal of the device. The device may be provided in a sterilised pack also containing a pair of gloves, a speculum, and a plastics introducer tube with a plunger.
