Liquefaction of compressed natural methane prior to storage in a tank 30 and subsequent vaporization and transfer to a service line 40 is effected by cooling in exchangers 13, 14, 65, 19, 23 to liquefaction temperature, further cooling in the tube side of a first evaporator-condenser cooled on the shell side by liquid methane withdrawn from tank 30 through lines 50, 51, 42, flashing the further cooled liquid methane into tank 30 from the gas space of which methane is withdrawn through lines 31, 33, compressed at 32, liquefied in the tube side of a second evaporator-condenser 34 and returned through lines 35, 38 to tank 30; the shell side being cooled by liquid methane withdrawn from tank 30 through lines 50, 51, 53 and the so-vaporized methane being fed through exchangers 23, 65, 13 and a line 39 to the service line 40. Heat exchangers 14, 19 are included in closed propane and ethylene cycles respectively.
