Pharmaceutical compositions, having antiinflammatory and anti-oedematous activity, comprise a mixture of amylase and lysozyme (muramidase) together with a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle. The amylase may be of bacterial, animal or vegetable origin, suitably being prepared from mushrooms. Lysozyme, which may be found in nasal mucus, saliva, tears, human milk or egg white, is suitably prepared from the latter, in aqueous solution, by absorption on bentonite, with elution of the enzyme with aqueous pyridine of pH 5.0, followed by precipitation with ammonium sulphate, dialysis and desiccation of the product. The compositions preferably also contain chymotrypsin, and mucopolysaccharidases (chondrosulphatase and hyaluronidase), or other depolymerising or hydrolytic enzymes. They may be in the forms for oral or topical administration, such as tablets, coated tablets, sublingual tablets, syrup, unit dosage packets, ointments, or spray solutions for use in an atomiser.
