Abstract

The electrically propelled wheelchair is for semi-ambulant persons. It has a chassis with oblique cross-members, mounted at the rear on two motorised wheels and at the front on two steerable wheels. Above the chassis is mounted the chair itself, including a seat and a backrest. Each wheel is powered directly by an electric motor; the motors being controlled separately from a control box. The chair's suspension mechanism permits collapsing of the seat and the backrest onto the chassis when not in use to reduce the volume of the armchair for storage. The chair may be driven under electrical power, allowed to free-wheel or braked by a wheel-locking lever. Under electrical traction, the drive motors engage directly with the rims of the powered wheels.
