Abstract

Components for an artificial hip joint comprise a pair of complementary relatively thin walled hemispherical mouldings, one used to line the socket cavity tin in the pelvis and one to cap the head of the femur, to replace damaged cartilage. The components are of acrylic material with a wear resistant ceramic coating based on chromium oxide. Little modification of the basic bone structures is required, and three-dimensional freedom of movement of the joint and the natural shock absorbant characteristics of the original bone form are retaiend.
