Abstract

A membrane with a highly efficient seal is built up from separate sheets assembled from bands of material on stocks. Each linear connection between two sheets has on the one hand, a mechanical means of restraint, preventing them from moving relatively to each other, and on the other, means of ensuring a tight seal along an uninterrupted line following the edge of each sheet. The edges of the sheets forming the membrane overlap each other, and the overlap of one sheet is attached to that of the other by three lines of parallel joints. The two outside lines are mechanical restraints whilst an uninterrupted central line, tightly and definitely bonds the overlapping parts together. Used for linings of basins, reservoirs, waterways, etc. for storing water, chemical effluents, etc., and for sealing roofs, inflatable structures, etc. The membranes covering large areas may be assembled on site or in yards with stocks from sheets built up from separate lengths of goods in the ice. The tightness of the joints can be verified without waiting until the site is filled with water, so that the very great difficulties which may arise from slight defects are avoided.
