Abstract

A gear box with an infinitely variable speed ratio consists of an input shaft driving a crown wheel. The crown wheel meshes with pinions mounted in a housing. The pinions mesh with a second crown wheel which drives the output shaft. The housing carries a worm wheel which meshes with a worm driven by an electric motor or other source of power. If the housing is held stationary, then the output shaft rotates at the same speed as the imput shaft. When the housing is rotated, the speed of the output shaft changes, being controlled by the speed of rotation of the housing.
