Abstract

Implantation device is intended for the introduction of pellets, based on natural hormones, under the skin of animals. The object is to increase the growth of the animal and facilitate the anabolism of proteins and so produce developed carcasses, rich in meat. The implanter consists of a moulded plastic handle with external projections for improving the grip. The internal boring is extended by a chamber for receiving the cartridge (I), contg. the pellets, in the operation position. This chamber is located opposite the inlet of a hypodermic needle and immediately below a magazine contg. a pile of identical cartridges. (I) is in the lowest, active position in the discharging chamber. The cartridges consist of cylindrical sleeves; each contains a number of pellets corresponding to a unit dose to be discharged and implanted in a single thrust of the push-rod. The emptied cartridge is ejected on the return stroke of the rod. The device is suitable for a number of successive operations which can all be effected rapidly on grazing cattle. As the dose is divided into a number of pellets, a large surface area is obtd. for the diffusion and absorption of the active prods. in the midst of the conjunctive tissues of the receiving animal.
