Abstract

The level of the surface of a fluid or powder is measured by inserting a tube with the upper end closed into the material. Sound waves are reflected from the surface and picked up by a receiver shielded from the direct sound wave. The echo path can be used to set the frequency of the source according to the path length, or to vary the phase of a wave from a fixed source. In each case frequency or phase to voltage converters can be used to give an output proportional to the level. Alternatively the cavity may be excited by white noise to find the frequency at which a standing wave is formed.
