Abstract

A cylinder is rotated, and whilst this occurs a profile of the cylinder is projected on to an optical detector. The difference between ttwo successive profile images is then determined, and this difference compared with a predetermined value. The cylinder is accepted for refilling only if the variation between successive profiles is less than the predetermined limit. A cylinder which is not within the limit is ejected from the conveyor. If light falling on the photosensors strikes more than one element at once, then the exact position of the beam is determined by a process of interpolation with reference to the intensity of light received by the neighbouring detectors.
