Abstract

A scroll machine utilizing working fluid under pressure to enhance axial sealing, including several embodiments of a multi-function floating seal to isolate the axial biasing fluid, and provide vacuum protection and a degree of high pressure ratio protection.

Description

Claims (34)

1. A scroll machine comprising:
(a) a hermetic shell (10);
(b) an orbiting scroll member (40) disposed in said shell (10) and having a first spiral wrap (44) on one face thereof;
(c) a non-orbiting scroll member (58) disposed in said shell (10) and having a second spiral wrap (56) on one face thereof, said wraps being intermeshed with one another;
(d) means for causing said orbiting scroll member (40) to orbit about an axis with respect to said non-orbiting scroll member (58) whereby said wraps will create pockets of progressively changing volume;
(e) means for mounting one of said scroll members for limited axial movement with respect to the other scroll member;
(f) means defining an annular cavity (78) exposed to a surface of one of said scroll members which will cause pressurised fluid in said cavity (78) to bias said one scroll member (58) toward the other scroll member (40), said cavity (78) having an inner wall surface and an outer wall surface;
(g) means defining a fluid leakage path between said cavity (78) and the interior of said shell (10);
(h) means (82) for supplying fluid under pressure to said cavity (78) for biasing said scroll members axially together; and (i) annular seal means disposed in said cavity, said seal means having first (124,226,316) and second seals (128,230,318) sealingly engaging said inner and outer wall surfaces, respectively, to isolate said pressurised fluid in said cavity (78) from said leakage path.
32. A scroll compressor comprising:
(a) a hermetic shell (10);
(b) an orbiting scroll member (40) disposed in said shell (10) and having a first spiral wrap (44) on one face thereof;
(c) a non-orbiting scroll member (58) disposed in said shell (10) and having a second spiral wrap (56) on one face thereof, said wraps being intermeshed with one another;
(d) means for causing said orbiting scroll member (40) to orbit about an axis with respect to said non-orbiting scroll member (58) whereby said wraps will create pockets of progressively decreasing volume to compress a fluid from a suction pressure to a discharge pressure;
(e) means for mounting one of said scroll members for limited axial movement with respect to the other scroll member;
(f) means defining an cavity (78) exposed to a surface of one of said scroll members which will cause pressurised fluid in said cavity (78) to bias said one scroll member (58) toward the other scroll member (40);
(g) means defining a first fluid leakage path between said cavity (78) and a zone in said shell at suction pressure;
(h) means defining a second fluid leaking path between said cavity (78) and a zone in said shell at discharge pressure;
(i) means (82) for supplying fluid to said cavity at a pressure intermediate said suction and discharge pressures for biasing said scroll members axially together; and (j) seal means disposed in said cavity, said seal means having three seals, said first seal (128,230,318) isolating said pressurised fluid in said cavity from said first leakage path, said second seal (124,230,318) isolating said cavity from said second leakage path, and said third seal (130,232,320) isolating fluid at suction pressure from fluid at discharge pressure across the face of said seal means.
34. A scroll compressor comprising:
(a) a hermetic shell (10);
(b) an orbiting scroll member (40) disposed in said shell (10) and having a first spiral wrap (44) on one face thereof;
(c) a non-orbiting scroll member (58) disposed in said shell (10) and having a second spiral wrap (56) on one face thereof, said wraps being intermeshed with one another;
(d) means for causing said orbiting scroll member (40) to orbit about an axis with respect to said non-orbiting scroll member (58) whereby said wraps will create pockets of progressively decreasing volume to compress a fluid from a suction pressure to a discharge pressure;
(e) means for mounting said orbiting scroll member for limited axial movement with respect to said non-orbiting scroll member;
(f) means defining an cavity (78) exposed to a surface of one of said scroll members which will cause pressurised fluid in said cavity (78) to bias said orbiting scroll member (58) toward said non-orbiting scroll member (40);
(g) means defining a first fluid leakage path between said cavity (78) and a radially inner zone in said shell at suction pressure;
(h) means defining a second fluid leaking path between said cavity and a radially outer zone in said shell at discharge pressure;
(i) means (82) for supplying fluid to said cavity at a pressure higher than said suction said pressure for biasing said scroll members axially together; and
(j) seal means disposed in said cavity, said seal means having four coaxial seals, said first and third seals isolating said pressurised fluid in said cavity from said first leakage path, said second and fourth seals isolating said cavity from said second leakage path, said biasing fluid being disposed between said first and second seals and between said third and fourth seals.
