Abstract

The system for anastomosing arteries and veins involves a connecting piece made from a body friendly material which is hollow. At each end of the connecting piece there is a cone shaped section. The connecting piece is introduced into the inner lumen of the blood vessel such that the inner side of the vessel wall is distended slightly due to the cone shaped sections. By means of a ring which is pushed over the vessel around the connecting piece it is fixed in position in a fluid tight manner whilst avoiding strangulation of the vessel. The ring is held in place by clamps formed on the connecting piece.

In surgery there is a blood-tight connection (anastomosis)of blood vessels with one another, or with artificial implants such as Dacronor Gore-Tex, no alternative to hand sewing. Such anastomosesare to be made and placed continuously in vascular surgery (e.g. bypass)an essential time factor in the duration of the operation. Also in the accidentSurgery sometimes causes such anastomoses to be considerableTime pressure required. - The system described below is permittedsafe anastomosis in a few moments with 3 relatively easyindividual parts to be produced.

It is a circular disc made of metal, plastic or other solid material, somewhat larger in diameter than the blood vessel in question and of a thickness of the order of a millimeter with a central, circular passage opening which is covered with blood-compatible material (Gore-Tex, Dacron or the like) is lined. The two circular surfaces of the disk rise towards the central opening, in a shape similar to a hyperboloid, so that the thickness of the disk increases towards the central opening in the form of a concave surface (on both sides). - SeeFig. 1 -. On the band-shaped side surface of the disc are made of spring steel or similar Lich elastic material attached hooks that protrude on both sides over the concave surfaces and are able to hold a ring of suitable size pushed over the central opening. - SeeFig. 2 + 3 -. This in the following the ring R described in more detail in its shape of the disc is adapted such that it is pressed with slight pressure on the concave surface - hereinafter referred to as F -, the hooks snap into a groove and cause the pressure to occur.

Now such a, adapted to the blood vessel diameter disc in theInserted lumen of the blood vessel, the elastic vessel wall slides undereasy expansion to the area F. By a suitable unidirectionalMicrostructuring of F makes it difficult to slide back. - The one beforethe matching ring R pushed onto the blood vessel is now placed over the blood vesselpushed onto the disc, the hooks snapping into the groove and himhold tight. This creates a slight pressure on the inner wall of the vessel (intima)held on the surface F. Will now be in the same way on the otherConnected to the side of the disc a natural or synthetic vessel, the anastomosis has ended.

The ring R is soft on its side lying against the blood vessel, hard on its side lying against the hook, which carries the groove, which is achieved either by different coating or construction from two different materials. - SeeFig. 4. -. The blood tightness is achieved by the slight pressure of the inside of the vessel (intima) on the surface F and can be supported by fibrin glue. The pressure that the ring R exerts on the vessel wall must not squeeze the tissue so much that necrotization (death) of the tissue occurs. - Rings and disc are manufactured in finely graduated different sizes, so that an exact adaptation to the blood vessel to be anastomosed can be made.
