Description

Translated fromChinese
Reclosable bags and reclosable channels in sliders for use in them

This invention relates to the field of containers in general, and more particularly to multipurpose, professional storage bags.

Background technique

Bags are generally used and regarded as convenient, versatile, lightweight and low cost containers. A bag with a reclosable opening is useful as it provides better security for the contents therein and for storage purposes. Such bags also have the advantage of better protecting precious or sensitive contents, or alternatively, protecting the environment from toxic or harmful contents.

A common closable bag construction has two rectangular base sheets of plastic film joined together along three sides, on one side usually leaving an opening at the top. A reclosable opening or zipper is provided on the opening side by forming interlocking strips on two opposing substrates, for example, through tongue and groove portions. The bag is conveniently closed by pressing the individual substrates together, whereupon the tabs snap into the slots, and are opened by pulling the substrates apart.

In some cases, sliders were added to facilitate opening and closing of bags. The slider is a separate, usually molded piece of plastic that is mounted on the substrate and forms the pocket opening around the sides of the substrate so that it can slide along the strip. Sliders are typically manufactured to apply an inward compression force to facilitate opposing planar connection or interlocking, and include separators or fingers across the opening of the bag. With this arrangement, closing the bag requires pushing the slider in the closing direction, while opening the bag requires moving the slider in the opposite, opening direction.

12。In many applications, such as food, liquid or biological waste storage, it is desirable for the closed bag to form an airtight or leak-proof seal. However, for bags with sliders, the separator or finger portion of the slider typically spans the opening, which prevents the formation of an airtight seal. In an attempted improvement, US Pat. No. 6,526,632 to Blythe has a slider that lifts the separation member away from the opening of the bag by rotating the slider upward at the closed end. However, the device is more complex than conventional sliders, which adds to the cost, and relies significantly on adedicated mating fastener 12 .

Another desirable feature, especially for precious contents, is the ability to remove residual air from the inside of the closed bag. A common practice among users of home storage bags is, for example, to first close the bag almost all the way, leaving only a small opening. The bag is then squeezed to release the remaining air through the small opening, after which the user attempts to quickly close the small opening before air re-enters the bag. However, this irregular approach is often inconvenient and produces erratic effects. It is also clumsy, especially for individuals with poor motor skills.

Several attempts have been made to construct closable bags with built-in means for removing air. For example, Minica patent US6045264 shows a bag with a top opening divided into a main opening and a smaller evacuation opening. The opening of the latter is constructed to include a straw for removing the remaining internal air. Strong's patent US5839582 shows a bag having an arcuate pump chamber with a suction inlet and a one-way valve. When the bag is closed, the pump chamber can be compressed to force air through the one-way valve. Herrington's US 4,532,652 shows an extension that is adhered in the hole in a substrate on the side of the membrane. Squeezing the bag causes the extensions to separate from the side substrates, allowing air to escape the holes. Afterwards, the extension returns to its position covering the hole, preventing further escape of the air inside.

All of these arrangements require changes to the standard storage bag, which adds to the cost. Also, the bag shown does not use sliders, which may be due to difficulties in forming an airtight seal with sliders.

Contents of the invention

What is needed is a reclosable bag that overcomes one or more of the problems associated with prior bags.

Preferably, the bag should be easy, convenient closure for the user. In particular, it is preferred if the bag is constructed using sliders, which facilitate a stronger airtight seal and opening and closing. A strong airtight seal better maintains the freshness of precious contents and better prevents toxic contents from contaminating the environment. It is also preferred that the bag be constructed such that, after closing the bag, the user can easily purge the bag interior of any remaining air, gas or fluid, or alternatively, fill the interior with gas or fluid without disturbing the airtight seal .

To keep costs low, the bags are preferably manufactured by conventional production techniques using standard materials and components. The bag is preferably suitable for production as a general purpose storage bag or as a commercial container for beverages and other items. Another preferred feature is that the closable opening feature to the bag is replaceable. Thus, instead of the usual construction where one side of the slider opens the bag and the other side closes the bag, for example the opening of the bag is made to remain closed on either side of the slider when the slider is moved. This feature allows greater flexibility in the production of closable bags which are more closely adapted to the needs of different occasions. It is also preferred that the bag effectively retains liquid and has features that prevent inadvertent leakage.

Accordingly, the present invention provides a reclosable bag comprising:

Detailed ways

Illustrated in FIG. 1 is the closable bag of the present invention, generally indicated by thereference numeral 10 . Wherein thebag portion 12 defines abag interior 14 . The bag portion is normally sealed or closed along its sides except for thebag opening 16 which defines an unsealed portion which can be selectively opened or closed. In FIG. 1 ,bag opening 16 is the top unsealed edge of the bag betweenend 22 andend 24 .

The sealable bag includes means for selectively opening and closing the bag opening. The means for opening and closing generally comprise two elements - aninterlocking structure 18 positioned opposite along theopening 16 of the bag, and aslide 20 . Thesliders 20 are located within thebag opening 16 between opposing interlockingstructures 18 and are generally movable along at least a portion of their length. Theslider 20 is also configured to cause engagement or disengagement of a portion of the opposinginterlock formation 18 it passes as it moves.

In FIG. 1 ,slider 20 is shown in an intermediate position betweenend 22 and end 24 ofbag opening 16 . In this position, the opposing interlockingstructure 18 is engaged as theclosure portion 15 of thebag opening 16 between theend 22 and theslider 20 and the disengaged structure becomes theclosure portion 15 of thebag opening 16 between theslider 20 and the end. 24 betweenopenings 17 . In FIG. 2 , theclosable bag 10 has aslider 20 that can slide all the way to theend 24 . It can be seen that in this position, the opposinginterlock formations 18 engage each other along the entire length of the bag opening 16 fromend 22 to end 24 . It can be seen that in this position of theslider 20 the closedportion 15 is at its maximum length.

Theclosable bag 10 is constructed such that when the slider is in the position shown in FIG. 2, wherein theinterlocks 18 are fully engaged and thebag opening 16 is fully closed, thebag 10 is generally hermetically sealed. The present invention also includes achannel 26 to provide access between thebag interior 14 and thebag exterior region 28, and means for selectively opening and closing said channel. In FIG. 1 ,channel 26 is shown withinslider 20 . By way of saidchannel 26 the bag according to the invention is able to selectively provide access between thebag interior 14 and theexterior region 28 when thebag opening 16 is completely closed and thebag 10 is also hermetically sealed.

Thebag portion 12 of the present invention encompasses any structure that functions as a container or bag. More specifically, bag portion 12 defines abag interior 14, which is a space within the bag capable of containing various contents for storage.

Thebag opening 16 represents an area or space whereby access to thebag interior 14 can be obtained. Depending on the application, the bag contents can be stored or retrieved through thebag opening 16 . Thebag opening 16 is preferably formed by an unsealed or unconnected seam of the material used to make up thebag portion 12, but may also be formed by a cut, crack, break, gap, hole or break at any other location in the surface of said material. to form. The location of thebag opening 16 may thus be along an edge, interface or seam of two or more pieces of bag material, or along a top, bottom, side, diagonal or other portion of the material.

As shown in the preferred embodiment of Figure 1, thesimple bag portion 12 is formed by joining two rectangular substrates of material along three of the four sides. Alternatively, the embodiment of Figure 1 can also be manufactured by folding a single sheet of material to form two base sheets and sealing the two sides. For ease of reference, the two substrates are indicated byfront substrate 30 andrear substrate 32 . In this embodiment, thebag interior 14 is the volume of space between the twosubstrates 30 and 32, while thebag opening 16 is surrounded on its perimeter by the edges of the two substrates on the unsealed top edge of the bag. formed area.

Thebag portion 12 also preferably includes asupport 33 on the bag exterior adjacent thebag opening 16 . The supports 33 may for example take the form of ridges, ledges, bulges or similar protrusions. In the bag of Figure 1, thesupport 33 is a thickened or thickened portion of the bag material along the edge of the top open side in each base sheet of the bag. As will be discussed in detail below, supports 33 provide surfaces that facilitate support or attachment ofslider 20 .

It should be observed that other embodiments of thebag portion 12 are possible as long as they define abag interior 14 capable of containing the contents and thebag opening 16 is provided for access to the bag interior. Some alternative embodiments include abag portion 12 formed from a single piece of spherical material with no bases or seams, as shown in FIG. 12, or a more complex gusseted bag with six bases, as shown in FIG. 13. In these embodiments, bag opening 16 may be formed by a break or cut in the material formingbag portion 12 .

Bag portion 12 is preferably made of a material of sufficient density to contain air, gas, liquid or other fluid contents without leaks and sufficient strength to contain the desired contents without tearing. The material should preferably be water resistant so as not to lose structural strength in contact with liquids. For these reasons, bags made of plastic or polyethylene have been found to suffice. Depending on the application, other materials such as films, laminates or coated or release papers may also be suitable. The bag material is preferably smooth, but may also be laminated. Said laminates are sometimes preferred, especially in large bags, because they provide channels for air movement within thebag interior 14 .

16。In order to maintain the soft nature of the bag, the material should also preferably be flexible or elastic. The degree of softness of the material can vary depending on the application. Preferably, however, there is at least enough flexibility so that the portion ofbag portion 12 that defines the perimeter ofbag opening 16 can be pulled or drawn together by a user to effectivelyclose bag opening 16 .

Thebag 10 of the present invention is generally constructed to close or seal any of its surfaces and all seams and sides except for thebag opening 16, which can be selectively opened or closed. Thus, closing thebag opening 16 has the effect of completely surrounding the interior 14 and closing thebag 10 .Bag 10 may alternatively be labeled "closable" or "reclosable," meaning in each case that the bag can be re-opened or closed.

16。In FIG. 1,pocket opening 16 is formed in the space between the top edges of the unsealed sides of opposingsubstrates 30 and 32. In FIG.Interlocking structure 18 is mounted on the interior portions of opposingsubstrates 30 and 32 that form the perimeter ofbag opening 16 . The interlockingstructure 18 may be more specifically referred to as afront part 34 of the front substrate 30 (not visible in FIG. 1 ) and an interlocking orrear part 36 on therear substrate 32 . The interlockingstructures 18 are disposed opposite each other and are sized and shaped to engage and close thebag opening 16 when thesubstrates 30 and 32 are brought together.

16。In the preferred embodiment of FIG. 1 , the location of the interlockingstructure 18 is at the inner top edges of thesubstrates 30 and 32 . This location is optimal because it maximizes theinterior volume 14 of thebag 10 . However, it will be appreciated that interlockingstructure 18 may be positioned anywhere onbag 10 and oriented in any orientation so long as it forms a pair of opposite size and shape that closesbag opening 16 when engaged.

Interlocking structure 18 represents any structure that enables opposing substrates ofbag portion 12 to engage to closebag opening 16 when said substrates are brought together or brought into close proximity, and also includes any such structure, That is, when the substrates are pulled or pushed apart, the engaged substrates can be separated to reopen thebag opening 16 . The interlockingstructure 18 is preferably sufficiently robust in design and composition to enable repeated opening and closing over the expected life of thebag 10 without experiencing an undue loss of strength in the engaging portions. Additionally, the interlock structures are preferably sized and shaped to form a seal when engaged. Thus, for example, fluid components of thebag interior 14 cannot flow out of the bag through the engaged interlocks.

A preferred type of interlockingstructure 18 includes mechanical elements that can be interlocked by an interference fit or a snap fit, such as by one feature sliding, compressing, or snapping within other features. Such an arrangement is often referred to as a "tongue-and-groove" or "male and female" configuration, with an inner part that is a tongue or male part and an outer part that is a groove or female part. FIG. 3 shows a cross-sectional view of a preferred embodiment of theinterlock structure 18 . In Fig. 3a, there are male or tongue features 34 and female or groove features 36. In FIG. In this figure, the opposing interlocks are not connected together or engaged together so that thebag opening 16 is open. In Fig. 3b, features 34 and 36 are engaged so thattongue feature 34 is inserted intoslot feature 36 with a snap fit. Thefeatures 34 and 36 are preferably made of the same plastic material as thesubstrates 30 and 32 and are sized and shaped so that thetongue 34 fits snugly within thegroove 36 . The combination of the snug fit and the resiliency of the material enables the engaged pair to form an effective seal and resist separation unless a minimal amount of force is applied to the opposingsubstrates 30 and 32 to pull them apart. It will be appreciated that the larger the tongue features 34 relative to the groove features 36, the more difficult it will be to snap fit these features, but the stronger the connection and the tighter the seal.

The preferred arrangement shown in Figure 3 has been found to be generally suitable, especially for low cost applications, as it has suitable performance properties and can be manufactured at low cost. However, it can be appreciated that other types of interlockingstructures 18 are also encompassed by the present invention, as long as they retain the characteristic of being able to engage or disengage without great difficulty, maintain a minimum strength sufficient for use in the engagement, and remain engaged after repeated opening and closing. The strength of this engagement is maintained after closure. Other possible embodiments may include, for example, magnetic means that engage or disengage opposing substrates.

12。Slider 20 is preferably a separate piece or element separate frombag portion 12 . 5-9 show various views of a preferred embodiment of theslider 20, with individual slider elements shown alone, or not connected to thebag portion 12, for improved clarity.

Referring to FIG. 5 ,slider 20 generally includes a center or core 38 with protruding handles 40 on either side. The core 38 has a top 42, a bottom 44, and a pair of sides or surfaces 46, which for clarity are also distinguished as side surfaces 45 and 47. The side surface 46 includes the portion of theslider 20 that faces or contacts the opposinginterlock structure 18 of thebag 12 .

38。As can be seen from hidden view in FIG. 5, the core body 38 is widest at the center and tapers toward opposing tops, ends orsides 48,50. The length of eachside 48 and 50 extends from the top 42 to the bottom 44 of the core body 38 . Theslider 20 is also preferably sized and shaped to complement the shape of the open end of the bag so that the slider forms an optimum seal. As a result of this preferred construction, the body 38 resembles a flattened ellipse in plan view, terminating at a point at each end. This feature of theslider 20 can also be seen in FIGS. 1 and 2, where the upper sides of thesubstrates 30 and 32 within thepocket opening 16, which surround the oval shape of theslider 20, are shown in hidden lines (dotted lines). core body38.

The handle 40 provides support to keep theslider 20 in place or attached to thebag 12, and also provides a handle, grip, or touch point for the user to grasp when moving the slider. The handle 40 is preferably attached to the slider body 38 or extends from the slider body 38 at or near the top 42 and extends outward to either side and some downward toward the bottom 44 . It is also preferred for the bottom of the handle to extend inwardly towards the body 38 to create a support flange 52 . In FIG. 5 , the handle 40 includes an outward facing panel 53 , a downward facing panel 54 and an inward facing panel 55 . It will be appreciated, however, that a handle 40 formed, for example, from a single curved panel will also suffice. In another embodiment, providing more surface area, the handle 40 can be raised vertically above the top 42 of the slider body before flipping out and down.

It will be appreciated that the handle 40 includes an inner portion facing the side 46 of the slider and an outer portion facing away from the side of the slider. The outer portion has a surface that can be gripped by a user to grasp or move theslider 20 . Accordingly, the handle 40, and particularly the outer portion of the handle 40, preferably has a size and shape that provides a comfortable and secure gripping surface. For example this may include scoring in the surface or the use of a nodulated rubber material to provide a more effective grip.

The size and shape of the handle 40 is also preferably such that the inner portion generally follows the contour of the side 46 of the slider. In the preferred embodiment of Fig. 5, the inner portion of the handle 40 correspondingly follows the elliptical contour of the core 38, which extends outwardly from theends 48 and 50 towards the center of the core. As shown, the handles 40 and their inner portions extend all the way toward theend 48 of the slider body 38 but stop near theend 50 . The reason for this configuration relates to the different functions served byends 48 and 50, and is discussed in more detail below.

Theslider 20 is also preferably constructed such that the separation or gap distance between the sides 46 of the slider body 38 and the interior portion of the handle 40 is approximately the thickness of theindividual substrates 30 and 32 of thebag portion 12 along thebag opening 16 . More preferably, the separation or gap distance will be greater than the thickness of the bag substrate so that there is enough room for the bag substrate to be inserted and fitted between the slider body 38 and the handle 40 while remaining closed and secure. reliable connection.

7 and 8 provide enlarged views of the side surface 46 of theslider 20 . For greater clarity, the handle 40 is only outlined in these figures so that the slider body 38 and sides 46 can be seen more clearly. It can be seen that eachindividual side surface 45 and 47 has a side rail 56 , or more specifically anindividual side rail 58 onside surface 45 andside rail 60 onside surface 47 . The side rails 56 are sized and shaped to cooperatively or slidably engage opposinginterlock formations 18 on thebag portion 12, and are therefore preferably configured as tongues or grooves. As can be seen in Figures 7a and 8b, theside rail 58 comprises a tongue or male connector, and it can be seen from Figures 7b and 8a that theside rail 60 comprises a groove or female connector.

Side rail 56 is preferably disposed in the middle of body 38 at the same distance from top 42 and bottom 44 . The side rails 56 are also preferably formed by carving the desired feature, whether tongue or groove, into the side 46 so that the side 46 maintains a flat or flush profile.

The side rails 56 generally extend the length of the sides 46 , but vary in configuration depending on which end 48 or 50 is nearby. End orflange 50 is highlighted in Figure 7, Figure 7a provides a perspective view ofside 45 andtongue side rail 58, Figure 7b provides a perspective view ofside 47 andgroove side rail 60, Figure 7c provides two Front view of two sides and side rails. It can be seen that the side rails 56 terminate just in front of theflange 50 and do not interact, abut or otherwise contact each other. Theflange 50 actually separates the side rails 56 so that a generally continuous, unbroken line is maintained from the top 42 to the bottom 44 of the slider body 38 .

62。Similarly, end orflange 48 is highlighted in Figure 8, Figure 8a provides a perspective view ofside 47 andgroove side rail 60, Figure 8b provides a perspective view ofside 45 andtongue side rail 58, Figure 8c provides a front view of both sides and side rails. In this case, the side rails 56 interact where they meet along theedge 48 , creating a hollowouter portion 62 .

62。FIG. 9 is provided to improve the clarity of the structure ofedge 48 . In Figure 9a, the trough side rails 60 are shown, but for illustration purposes, thesides 45 are left blank and the side rails 58 are not shown. It can be seen that thegroove 60 extends all the way to theedge 48 and surrounds it, so that the groove engraves a small portion of theside 45 . Similarly, in Figure 9b, the tongue-shapedside rail 58 is drawn, leaving theside 47 blank. In this case, thetongue 58 also extends all the way around and around it, thus extending into theside 47 . When the two side rails of FIG. 9 coincide, the result is thehollow portion 62 drawn along theedge 48 in the various views of FIG. 8 .

48。FIG. 6 is a side view or cross-sectional view of slider body 38 alongside 47 , illustratingslot side rail 60 . It can be seen thatedge 50 remains continuous rather than broken, as bothside rail 60 and side rail 58 (not shown) terminate just in front of the edge. In contrast, theside rail 60 extends all the way to and around theedge 48, creating ahollow portion 62 along the side rail 58 (not shown). As will be explained in greater detail below, the formation of each side rail atedge 50 has the effect of separating the opposinginterlock formation 18 while the formation atedge 48 engages theinterlock formation 18 . To this end, the slider end opening or separatingedge 50 and closing or joiningedge 48 can be indicated alternately.

The openingedge 50 can be made to form a straight vertical edge. However, as shown in Figure 6 and Figures 7a and 7b, theedge 50 is preferably configured to include protrusions or protrusions 64 at one or more locations along its length. The protrusion 64 is sized and shaped to allow theslider 20 to form a tighter, more complementary fit with the end of thebag opening 16 . In this way, when the slider is moved to one end of thebag opening 16, a more effective seal is created, as shown in FIG.

Theslider 20 also preferably includes achannel 26, which is a small hole or hole extending from the top 42 to the bottom 44 along the entire height of the slider. FIG. 5 shows a slider withchannels 26 drawn in dashed hidden parts. The channels have any cross-sectional shape, such as circular, oval, or rectangular, but are preferably circular.

Theslider 20 is preferably made of polyethylene or plastic material. Plastic is preferred because it is relatively strong, lightweight, water resistant, and low cost. Plastic also has the advantage that it can be manufactured into complex shapes such asslider 20 with relative ease. This can be achieved, for example, by the standard production process of injection molding, using a standard mold designed to conform to the shape of theslider 20 . When thebag portion 12 is plastic, plastic is also the preferred slider material so that the various components can be easily fabricated. It will be appreciated that other materials are also encompassed by the present invention so long as they possess some or all of the above properties. Other materials for the slider may include, for example, metal, alloy, or wood.

In forming thebag 10 of the present invention, the core 38 of theslider 20 is positioned within thebag opening 16 , thus positioning the sides 46 between the facing surfaces of thefront piece 34 and theback piece 36 . As shown in the cross-sectional view of Figure 4,sliders 20 are attached tobag portion 12 from both the inside and outside of the bag. On the interior of the bag, the side rails 56 of the slider cooperate or slidably engage with opposinginterlock structures 18 of thebag portion 12 . For the embodiment of FIG. 4 , the tongue of thefront part 34 fits or fits in the groove of theside rail 58 and the tongue of theside rail 60 fits or fits in the groove of therear part 36 . It will be appreciated that other embodiments of these interacting elements are possible so long as the slider is slidably engaged with thebag portion 12 . For example, it is possible to have theinterlock structure 18 flush with thebag portion 12 and have the side rails 58 and 60 protrude outwardly from the sides of the slider.

On the outside of the bag, it can be seen that the handle 40 of the slider is sized and shaped to conform or snugly fit theouter support 33 of thebag portion 12 . In particular, the handle 40 surrounds thesupport 33 so that the bottom of thesupport 33 rests on the support flange 52 of the handle 40 . It will be appreciated that other embodiments of these elements are possible as long as the handle has a means of securing the slider to the exterior of thebag portion 12 . For example, the specific shape of thesupport 33 and the handle 40 may vary so long as they continuously adapt to each other to form a closed and snug fit. Similarly, other types of additional connections than mechanical fits are possible, such as a magnetic connection between the interior of the handle 40 and the opposite outer edge of thebag portion 12 orsupport 33 .

It will be appreciated that the combination of the interlocking elements inside the bag and the tight fit of the handle around theouter support 33 secures theslider 20 to thebag portion 12 tightly. Specifically, theslider 20 is additionally attached in such a way that it cannot fall into thebag interior 14 or pop out of the top opening inadvertently. Without firm and forceful action, slider 20 will resist the most vigorous attempts to separate or remove it frombag portion 12 .

Slider 20 is sized and shaped to engage or, alternatively, disengage frominterlock structure 18 as the slider is moved alongbag opening 16 . More specifically, the configuration ofsides 48 and 50 ofslider 20 determines whether a given portion ofbag opening 16 will engage or disengage when the slider is moved in a particular direction.

Returning to the preferred embodiment of theclosable bag 10 shown in FIG. 1 , it can be seen that from the intermediate position theslider 20 can be moved in two directions, namely towards either end 22 orend 34 . When moving the slide in either direction, one of the slider sides 48 or 50 will face that end in the direction of movement, and the other side will face the opposite end to pull. Thebag 10 of the present invention is configured such that the slider can move along a portion of thebag opening 16, the interlockingstructure 18 in the portion covered by the movement of the slider being connected according to the nature of the trailing end or edge of theslider 20. Either engage, or alternatively, disengage or disengage.

More specifically, in FIG. 1 , theslider 20 is oriented so that the connectingedge 48 faces theend 22 of thebag 10 or theclosure portion 15 of thebag opening 16, and the separatingedge 50 faces theend 24 of the bag or the closingportion 15 of thebag opening 16. Openingpart 17. When theslider 20 is moved towards theend 24, the interlockingstructure 18 will connect, close, engage or interlock with the connectingedge 48 according to the drag. Thus, theclosed portion 15 will increase in length, while theopen portion 17 will decrease in length by an equal amount. As shown in FIG. 2, when the slider reaches theend 24, the entire length of theinterlock structure 18 will be closed. Similarly, when theslider 20 is moved towards theend 22, for example when moving from the position of FIG. 2 to the position of FIG. 1, the interlockingstructure 18 will separate, open or disengage from theseparation edge 50 according to the drag.

The connecting and disconnecting functions of theslider 20 can be understood by dragging the path of theinterlock 18 through thesides 48 and 80 of theslider 20 . As shown in FIG. 4 , the interlock engages the side rail 56 over most of the length of the slider side 46 . As the slider of FIG. 1 moves towardend 24, the portions of the interlock that pass trailingedge 48 will be drawn together due to the continuation of the side rails, just to and aroundedge 48. As each side rail surrounds opposite sides ofedge 48 , the slidably engaged tongue and groove features 34 and 36 are forced into contact, causingtongue 34 to snap or compress intogroove 36 . Furthermore, the inside of the handle 40 follows the contour of the side 46 up to theedge 48 . Because the gap or separation distance between the interior of the handle 40 and the side 46 is very small, and preferably only the edge is thicker than the upper edge of theindividual substrates 30 and 32, thesubstrates 30 and 32 are forced to rest on the side rails 56. track and force them to fit together. Thus, the interlockingstructures 18 go from being slidably engaged with the side rails 46 of the slider, as shown at 65 and 66 in FIG. , for a smooth transition.

Conversely, as the slider moves towardend 22, the portions ofmembers 34 and 36 of opposite characteristics past trailingedge 50 will not engage because of the termination of separatingedge 50 on side rail 56 on either side. Furthermore, the interior of the handle 40 only conforms to the contour of the side 46 up to a point where the separatingedge 50 is not yet reached. For the interior of the handle 40, it is not necessary to extend all the way, as there is no requirement at the separatingedge 50 to compress the interlocking structure together. As a result, as theparts 34 and 36 of opposite character approach each other as the profile of theslider 20 tapers towards theedge 50, they will remain separated due to their falling off the side rail 56 because there is no guide on the slider side rail. or track or no external pressure from the handle 40 to keep them together.

It will be appreciated that other opening/closing features of theclosable bag 10 can be achieved by modifying the structure of theslider 20 . For example, instead of having a connectingedge 48 and a separatingedge 50 , theslider 20 could have two connectingedges 48 . In this case, thebag opening 16 will remain closed for the desired length at any position of the slider on both sides of the slider. Alternatively, if the slider is configured with two separatingsides 50, no portion of thebag opening 16 will be closed.

Closable bag 10 is constructed to create an airtight seal withinbag 14 whenbag opening 16 is fully closed. This sealing occurs when theslider 20 is moved into the sealed position at theend 24 as shown in FIG. 2 .

The interlocks of the present invention are preferably sized and shaped to form a seal when engaged. In particular, tongue feature 34 andgroove feature 36 are preferably sized and shaped to form an airtight seal when they interlock or snap fit together. Thus, with the slider in the position shown in FIG. 2 , theclosed portion 15 of the bag opening 16 from theend 22 to the slider'send 48 will be hermetically sealed due to the engagement of theinterlock structure 18 .

Slider 20 is configured to sealbag opening 16 when positioned at the bag opening end.Slider 20 therefore preferably has a structure capable of creating a seal around its periphery. At the point where theclosure portion 15 meets the connectingedge 48 , the interlockingstructures 18 are squeezed together due to the inward pressure from the tightly fitting handles and connection to the side rails 56 . Thus, an airtight seal is maintained at the interface of theinterlock 18 and the slider. Along the sides 46 of the slider, an airtight seal is maintained due to the snap fit between the side rails 56 and theinterlock structure 18 . Accordingly, the side rails 56 are preferably sized and shaped to create an airtight fit or engagement with theinterlock structure 18 . At the interface of the separatingedge 50 and theend 24 of thebag 10 , an airtight seal is achieved by configuring theslider 20 , in particular the separatingedge 50 , which then compensates for the shape of thebag opening 16 at theend 24 . In the preferred embodiment of thebag 10, theside 50 of the slider has a "V" shape which complements and closely fits the similar "V" shape of thebag opening 16 at theend 24 . The separatingedge 50 preferably also includes a protrusion or protrusion 64 . As shown in the side view of FIG. 6 , this feature maintains an airtight seal by protruding from the slider to fill any incremental space that may exist at theend 24 of thebag opening 16 leading to air leaks.

It will be appreciated that other shapes of theslider 20 andbag portion 12 may be used as long as the shapes of the top end of the slider and the end of thebag opening 16 are sufficiently complementary to form a snug, snug fit. It will also be appreciated how the present invention improves upon the prior art. Sliders used in the past typically included separators or fingers that detach or pry apart the substrate. The separators are generally configured to fulfill this function and do not form a complementary fit with the opening of the bag. Such sliders generally cannot seal the bag opening during ordinary movement because the separator prevents the slider from completely closing the bag opening.

To maintain the seal when the slider reachesend 24, it is preferable to provide a latch or other means to hold theslider 20 in place and prevent it from backing up. This is accomplished in the present invention by a detent, which is a pin or lever that locks a portion of the slide's movement. The detent may be positioned anywhere along theslider 20 orbag portion 12 .

In the preferred embodiment of FIG. 1 , thebag portion 12 includes afirst stop 68 and theslider 20 includes asecond stop 70 on the inside of the handle 40 . Thefirst detent 68 and thesecond detent 70 are configured to engage each other when the slider is moved to the sealing position. Thefirst detent 68 is preferably a bump or raised nodule on the outer surface of thebag portion 12 , such as on theouter support 33 . Thesecond detent 70 is preferably a groove located inside the handle 40 . Thedetent 68 snaps into or engages thedetent 70 when theslider 20 is moved to the sealing position. The resulting connection is preferably strong enough to hold theslider 20 in place while being able to be pushed by the user towards theend 22 without undue difficulty when the bag needs to be reopened.

It will be appreciated that other embodiments that lock the slider are possible as long as theslider 20 is prevented from backing off and a good seal is maintained. For example, FIG. 10 shows aslider 20 havinglugs 72 disposed on the top 42 of the slider. In the sealed position shown in FIG. 10 , the tab can be moved, rotated, or otherwise positioned to snap fit with detents (not shown) on the outer edge ofbag portion 12 . When the slider needs to be moved, thelug 72 is flipped up and out of the way to restore slider mobility.

Thechannel 26 is configured to provide access between thebag interior 14 and theexterior region 28 regardless of whether thebag opening 16 is open or closed. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, thechannel 26 is preferably inside or integral with theslider 20 . Because the slider is positioned between theinterlocks 18, it will be appreciated that access between thebag interior 14 and theexterior region 28 through thechannel 26 will not be affected even if thebag opening 16 is hermetically closed and sealed.

The size and shape of thechannel 26 can provide access to the passage of fluids, such as gases or liquids, or solid substances like granules or powders.

Thechannel 26 is also preferably sized and shaped to accept afluid delivery conduit 74, such as a pipe, tube, or common straw. The general shape of thetube 74 is shown in FIG. 10 . Such a device, when connected to the channel from thebag exterior 28 , allows the use of suction, for example through thechannel 26 , to remove fluid from thebag interior 14 . More specifically, a suction device having a coupling or insertion end 76 and afree end 78 may be connected to thechannel 26 on the slider top surface 42 . Suction can be applied at thefree end 78 to suck the contents of thebag interior 14, which is a fluid such as a liquid or gas. In industrial applications, the suction is preferably applied by mechanical vacuum means. In consumer products, the suction is preferably applied by the user's mouth acting on thefree end 78 of the straw. Preferably, thefluid delivery tube 74 is detachable and thechannel 26 is sized and shaped accordingly to enable connection and disconnection of thedetachable tube 74 . Thus, after removal of fluid from thebag interior 14, thetube 74 can be easily removed, thus not interfering with the bag's use as a storage container.

Channel 26 preferably includes a device or valve 80 for opening and closing the channel, as shown in FIG. 5 . Valve 80 is any device or structure capable of being disposed withinpassage 26 that is sized and shaped and configured to have at least one closed state and at least one open state. Fluid flow throughpassage 26 is blocked when valve 80 is in a closed state. In this state, if thebag opening 16 is fully closed, thebag interior 14 is hermetically sealed. Fluid flow into thebag interior 14, or between thebag interior 14 and thebag exterior 28, is enabled when the valve 80 is in the open state. It will be appreciated that when valve 80 is in the open state andbag opening 16 is fully closed, access tobag interior 14 is only available throughchannel 26 and valve 80 .

Valve 80 is preferably a one-way valve, meaning that when the valve is in the open state, fluid is only allowed to flow in one direction. For example, the one-way valve may be configured to allow the flow of fluid away from thebag interior 14 to the exterior 28 , but to block the flow of fluid from the exterior 28 to thebag interior 14 . For example, this type of valve is useful for purging the air in used bags to store food or other precious contents. Alternatively, the one-way valve may have a structure that allows access or fluid flow in the other direction only, namely from thebag exterior 28 into thebag interior 14 , and blocks fluid flow from thebag interior 14 to theexterior 28 . This type of valve is useful for applications that require the injection of a specific gas or liquid into the bag that preserves or protects the contents of the bag, such as the use of formaldehyde to preserve biological specimens.

Bag 10 of the present invention includes the use of virtually any type of valve 80 that can achieve the desired flow characteristics throughchannel 26 . For example, valve 80 could be a two-way valve rather than a one-way valve. A two-way valve is a valve that has two open states, one of which permits fluid flow in one direction and the other permits flow in the other direction. The activation of a specific state can be obtained simply from the use of the valve. For example, squeezing thebag 10 may cause air to flow from thebag interior 14 through the valve 80 to thebag exterior 28 . Alternatively, the tubing can be connected to channel 26 with the same valve and pressure applied to force fluid into the bag. In this state, the valve allows fluid to flow from the direction opposite to the first application direction, ie from the exterior 28 to the interior 14 of the bag. Alternatively, the two-way valve 80 may be of such a construction that the permitted direction of fluid is set by a switch on the valve itself or preferably on the surface of theslider 20 .

The valve 80 may be constructed such that when it is in the open position, thepassage 26 is substantially or fully open so that fluid flowing through the passage can flow at its highest velocity. Alternatively, valve 80 may be configured to partiallyclose passage 26 to any desired extent.

It will be appreciated that the valves are generally configured to fit within a channel or within a tube within a solid body. Therefore, to fit within thechannel 26 of the present invention, many types of standard valves are available, since thechannel 26 is preferably located within the solid body of theslider 20 . One common type of valve suitable for use inpassage 26 of the present invention is a ball valve, which is generally shown as valve 80 in FIG. 5 . When pressure is applied to the ball valve, such as suction throughtube 74 , the ball valve lifts and openspassage 26 . Another type of valve 80 is a pinching valve, which provides passage through a channel that squeezes or pinches the slider. Similarly, many other types of valves that are very common in industrial and consumer applications may find use in the present invention. In addition to a ball valve or a pinch valve, the valve 80 can be, for example, a flapper valve, a gas valve, or a check valve.

The present invention includes the use ofsliders 20 withoutintegral channels 26 . It will be appreciated that a bag withslider 20 is useful even withoutchannel 26 becauseslider 20 has a structure that opens or closesbag opening 16 and forms an airtight seal when in the fully closed position. For example, thebag 10 may be filled with a liquid, with closed sliders forming an airtight seal to prevent leakage of the liquid. When using liquid contents, push the slider to open slightly to pour out the liquid. Such abag 10 has the advantage of being easy to open and close thanks to theslider 20, but also has the benefit of an airtight seal to better preserve precious contents or contain liquids.

The invention also includes separating thechannel 26 from theslider 20 . Such an arrangement is preferably accomplished using apassage element 82 that incorporates or is integral with thechannel 26 . Theaccess element 82 is a body generally disposed between two sides of thebag 10 or two substrates, which contains thechannel 26 and the valve 80 .Access element 82 has a size and shape similar toslider 20 , or it has any other size and shape so long as it fits between the sides ofbag 10 .Access element 82 is preferably fixed in place. This is accomplished, for example, by sealing thesubstrates 30 and 32 around the respective edges of theaccess element 82 .

74。In one embodiment, the two sides of thebag 10 may be the two sides of the opposingsubstrates 30 and 32 that define thebag opening 16 . In this case, the sides of viamember 82 may be sealed between opposingsubstrates 30 and 32 in various ways well known in the art. Thebag 10 can also be made without the interlockingstructure 18 surrounding theaccess member 82 since thestructure 18 is not required to support the movement of the slider within this portion of thebag opening 16 . The embodiment shown in FIG. 11 , which shows themovable slider 20 without thechannel 26 , and theaccess member 82 has thechannel 26 and the removable tube orstraw 74 .

It will be appreciated that where theaccess member 82 is secured, the use of thechannel 26 into thebag interior 14 is not affected by the particular location of theaccess member 82 within thebag 10 . Thus, in yet another embodiment, the sides of thebag 10 may be sides of the opposingsubstrates 30 and 32 that do not define thebag opening 16 . This generally includes the perimeter of thebag 10 except for that portion occupied by thebag opening 16 . In FIG. 11 , for example, the two sides on whichaccess member 82 is disposed may be the sides ofsubstrates 30 and 32 alongclosed sides 84 and 86 ofbag 10 .

In this embodiment, it is preferred that theaccess members 82 disposed between opposing substrates or opposing sides of thebag 10 are joined, welded or stitched together. Such an arrangement simplifies the manufacture of thebag 10 because theaccess element 82 can be positioned between the substrates which surround the access element. The substrates can be welded or stitched together as before, sealing theaccess element 82 between them. Where two opposing substrates are joined by folding, the mounting of the via element can be inconvenient due to the need to make holes. For example, if thebag 10 in FIG. 11 was made from a single substrate folded along thebottom edge 88, it would be inconvenient to install access elements on theedge 88. Installingaccess member 82 along eitherside 84, 86, 88 is just as convenient if the bag is made fromseparate substrates 30 and 32 welded or joined together along all sides.

The preferred embodiment of the invention can now be understood as the case where theaccess element 82 is theslider 20 . This embodiment is preferred because bags with only one body, including sliders with integrated channels, are generally less expensive and more efficient to manufacture and use than bags with two bodies, including access elements and sliders. high.

Production of a common type of bag involves joining two rectangular substrates along three sides or along opposite sides of a single folded substrate, leaving an open bag opening 16 on one side. The slider can be inserted into thebag opening 16 during manufacture so that it can move along thebag opening 16 without being removed from the bag. Standard production equipment also typically operates at high operating or production speeds, which results in reduced costs.

82。Thebag portion 12 of thebag 10 of the present invention can similarly be formed from one or two plastic substrates joined along two or three sides leaving abag opening 16 . The interlockingstructure 18 along thebag opening 16 is similarly fabricated using standard production techniques. Theslider 20 of the present invention is manufactured as a separate body, capable of being produced by standard injection molding techniques. Thus, while the slider differs in form and function from prior art sliders, it can still be manufactured at a similar low cost. Furthermore, standard production equipment for producing bags and mounting sliders can be used to produce thebags 10 of the present invention. In production, themoveable slider 20 will be positioned below thebag opening 16, if desired, with aseparate access element 82 installed within thebag opening 16 or along the junction or seam between the substrates before the substrates are sealed. .

Accordingly, it will be appreciated that thebag 10 of the present invention can be produced at about the same or comparable cost as a conventional slider bag without the other advantages of the present invention. Material costs for bags and sliders are similar to conventional bags, and production equipment is the same or can be used with only minor modifications. Furthermore, since standard production equipment can be used, the industry standard high operating speeds of such equipment can continue to be applied. It will also be appreciated that this represents an improvement over the prior art. Because prior art devices often require non-traditional bags and valves, the materials and production equipment for the bags and valves are not standard and require customization. Additionally, operating speeds may be relatively low, which increases the cost per bag.

The operation of the present invention will now be described using the embodiment of areclosable bag 10 configured as shown in FIG. 10 as a household storage bag. The user initiates use by moving theslider 20 to theend 22 , opening thebag opening 16 . The user deposits theprecious food item 90 in thebag interior 14 and then moves theslider 20 to the closed or sealed position at theend 24 to close the bag. In the case ofslider 20 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 usingdetents 68 and 70, the user measures how far to move the slider by feeling or hearing the detents click or snap into place, then in thesecond End 24 engages the slider. Alternatively, in the case of the slider withlugs 72 as shown in Figure 10, the user locks the slider into place by turning the lugs to the downward position and latching them into place.

At this point, the bag will be hermetically sealed, but thebag interior 14 may contain residual air. The user then exchanges air or fluid between thebag interior 14 and thebag exterior 28 through thechannel 26 in thereclosable bag opening 16 . For example, removal of air or fluid from thebag interior 14 may be accomplished by inserting the insertion end 76 of thehollow tube 74 into thechannel 26 and applying suction to thefree end 78 . When a consumer product, hollow tube 74 is preferably a straw, and suction is applied by the user's mouth. The valve 80 in this embodiment is preferably a one-way valve, allowing fluid to flow in a direction from the interior 14 to theexterior 28 of the bag. When thebag interior 14 is completely or substantially free of air, thetube 74 can be removed from thechannel 26, and thebag 10 can be placed in the warehouse. In another embodiment, instead of using thehollow tube 74 , thebag 10 can be squeezed to force remaining air to escape thebag interior 14 through thechannel 26 . This method can also be achieved by a slider andaccess element 82 as shown in FIG. 11

Embodiments are realized.

14。It will be appreciated that the method of closing a bag of the present invention represents an improvement over the prior art. In the prior art, the user would normally move theclosed end 24 of the slider, leaving asmall opening 17 . Squeeze the bag to force the remaining air out ofopening 17. The user then closes the slider with one hand while keeping the other hand pressed against the bag to prevent air from entering during the process of closing the slider. Furthermore, once the bag is closed, it is not possible to form an airtight seal due to the separator of a conventional slider or the presence of fingers within the bag opening. In contrast, in the present invention, the user is able to force the air out of the bag by squeezing the bag, applying suction to thehollow tube 74, or otherwise, without concern for possible inflow of air because the valve 80 will lock any incoming air. It can thus be appreciated that the method of closing the bag of the present invention is simpler, more convenient than conventional methods and also produces a largerinterior space 14 of the bag free of air.

In another application of the invention, a valve 80 is installed in thechannel 26 which allows fluid to flow into thebag interior 14 while preventing flow in the opposite direction. Such bags may be used in industrial settings to receive drinking fluids or other commercially available fluids. For example, where the contents are drinking fluids, the valve 80 can be a two-way valve so that the user can use a straw to access the contents. Alternatively, a dual body configuration as shown in FIG. 11 could be used, in which theslider 20 has achannel 26 with a valve allowing fluid to flow in one direction, and thepassage member 82 has a valve with a valve allowing fluid to flow in the other direction. valve channel. In this case, one channel is used to fill the bag and the other channel is used to remove or drink the contents. For non-potable type fluids, pushing the slider opens a small distance to allow the user to pour out the contents.

It will be appreciated that a variety of commercial bag configurations are possible with the present invention. Specifically, parameters to be utilized by the designer of thebag 10 of the present invention include the selection ofsides 48 and 50 as sides for sliders, whether asingle slider 20 is used between them or with one or two Theadditional access element 82 of the channel, selects the type of valve 80 and whether to seal all or part of theinterlock structure 18 . In addition, designers can choose from a variety of bag shapes in addition to the standard two-substrate configuration. For example, Figures 12 and 13 show an example of abag 10 suitable for use as a commercial beverage container. Figure 12 is a circular container and Figure 13 is a rectangular container with gussets on either end. Said circular container has the advantage of being cheap, provides the largest internal volume for a given amount of material to be used, and also optimizes transport capacity, since adjacent bags are compressed against each other, leaving very little unused space.

Standard equipment can also be used to produce thebag portion 12, for the type of bag shown in Figures 12 and 13. Thebag opening 16 may be formed by slits or cuts in the surface of the bag to which theslider 20 is mounted using standard equipment. In variations of the illustrated embodiment, thebag opening 16 can be made shorter, or the length of thebag opening 16 can be sealed as long as possible. The slider can be moved along a short distance approximately equal to the length of the slider. In production, the slider can be placed in a position leaving asmall opening 17 into which a nozzle is inserted to fill the container. The slider is then moved a short distance to seal the opening and remains in this position after sale. Access in use may be through a straw inserted intochannel 26 .

One problem that arises with commercial beverage packages made of soft materials or intended for use by children is the inadvertent ejection of the contents due to the pressure applied to the sides of the bag. In the bag of FIGS. 12 and 13 , it will be appreciated that the valve 80 used is preferably configured to allow fluid to flow out of thebag interior 14 . Such valves may also be configured to remain closed up to a predetermined threshold of pressure. For example, the pressure value can be set higher than the pressure value normally caused by accidental squeezing of the bag. Preferably, the pressure threshold can be set to meet the minimum suction level, either solely based on a certain squeeze of the sides of the bag or based on a combination of these side squeezes. Thereby, inadvertent ejection of the bag contents can be reduced or avoided. Furthermore, the passages shown may be sized to allow only a limited flow to prevent sudden ejection of liquid.

In another embodiment, thebag 10 is provided with a slider having two connectingsides 48 . Thebag opening 16 is then always closed on both sides of theslider 20 . In yet another variant, the slide can have thechannel 26 without the valve 80, so that said channel is always open.Substrates 30 and 32 underslider 20 can also be sealed together at any point except a small portion. Thus, thebag 10 can be sealed at eachslider 20 except where theslider 20 is located so that thechannel 26 is directly over the opening. The position of the slider acts in this embodiment as a valve to open or close the passage. In production, the slider is first placed over the opening to receive the nozzle entering the channel, for example to fill the bag with drinking fluid. Then, push the slider to the side to seal the contents during transport or storage. When ready for sale, the consumer can move the slider to the inlet position and insert the straw to drink the contents.

It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the foregoing description is of a preferred embodiment and that various changes and modifications are possible without departing from the spirit of the invention within the broad scope of the appended claims. For example, when referring to a bag having one or two bodies, more bodies may also be used within a single bag to the benefit of the present application. Various other modifications will be recognized by those skilled in the art, but not in any other detail described herein.
