The present invention relates to safety devices. Broadly speaking, it relates to a dispenser for liquid dosing, the device being particularly, but not exclusively, useful as an eyewash station.
Both employees and employers are naturally concerned about workplace safety. In addition, the government enforces stringent safety requirements across numerous industries, and fines are imposed if these safety requirements are violated.
The human eye is very sensitive to gases, liquids and solids which upon contact can irritate and possibly permanently damage the eye. Therefore, one of the safety requirements for industries that generate large amounts of fumes, such as mining, is to provide adequate devices to ensure that workers can flush these irritants from their eyes.
One way to relieve irritation is to apply a medicinal liquid formulation, commonly known as an eyewash, to the eye. One of the most popular formulations is a saline solution. This eyewash is usually in a bottle that is kept at first aid stations and ready to use when needed.
Although there are a wide variety of dispensing bottles available, one drawback of these prior art devices is that they are difficult to use, especially when the user is temporarily blind and unable to obtain assistance. This is especially the case when industry is moving away from employing dedicated security staff in order to cut operating costs. Another problem posed by the elimination of safety personnel is that safety equipment is no longer routinely checked to be in good working order and may fail when in use.
There is thus a continuously increasing demand for a safety device which has a longer shelf life and which can be easily used by a single user.
It is therefore a general object of the present invention to overcome or at least ameliorate one or more of the disadvantages described above.

图2是处于“未开启”位置的图1所示装置的上部的侧面剖面图;Figure 2 is a side sectional view of the upper portion of the device shown in Figure 1 in the "unopened" position;
图3是处于“开启”位置的图2所示装置的上部的侧面剖面图;Figure 3 is a side sectional view of the upper portion of the device shown in Figure 2 in the "open" position;
图4是图1所示装置的组件的俯视平面图;Figure 4 is a top plan view of the components of the device shown in Figure 1;
FIG. 5 is a bottom plan view of the assembly shown in FIG. 4 .
Referring to the drawings, the device (1) comprises a container (2) for holding the desired liquid formulation. A typical volume of container (2) is 300ml. The outer surface of the neck (3) of the container (2) includes a threaded portion (4). The formed inner cap (5) includes a complementary threaded portion (6) to engage the threaded portion (4) of the neck (3). A conduit (7), open at both ends (8, 9), is integral with the inner cap (5) and extends from the inner cap (5) close to the bottom of the container (2). A first recess (10) surrounds the outer surface of the inner cap (5) and is located at its bottom end (Fig. 2). A second recess (11) surrounds the outer surface of the inner cap (5) and is located approximately in the middle of the cap (5) (Fig. 3). An eyecup reservoir (12) including an upper portion (13) shaped to fit the orbit of a human eye. A tubular bottom (14) extends from the bottom of the reservoir (12) and terminates in an internal ridge (15). The inner raised part (15), the first recessed part (10) and the second recessed part (11) are exactly complementary in shape. At the junction (16) of the upper part (13) and the bottom part (14) of the eyecup reservoir (12), there is a plate (17) comprising a plurality of perforations (18) (Figures 4 and 5). The eyecup reservoir (12) also includes some drain holes (19). Below the junction (16) is a cutting edge (20) (Figs. 1 and 5). When the container (2) is filled with the desired formulation, a septum (21) (Fig. 1) seals the neck (4) opening of the container (2). A suitable formulation is a commercially available 0.9% saline solution, which has a shelf life of about 3 years when sealed from air. After affixing the septum (21), the reservoir (12) is mounted on the inner cap (5) such that the protuberance (15) is housed in the recess (11) (Figures 1 and 2). A cap (not shown) can be added on the liquid reservoir (12) to prevent dust and the like from entering the liquid reservoir (12) before using the device (1). The whole device (1) can then be further encapsulated in a "shrink wrap" or similar hermetic film.
All components of the device (1) can be made of a plastic material satisfying the following properties: (a) the sides of the container (2) can be flexed inwardly by the user of the device (1); and (b) the reservoir (12 ) can be elastically deflected so that the raised portion (15) can disengage from the recess (11) and engage the recess (10). It is better but not necessary that the color of the inner cap (5) is different from that of the rest of the components, which can help to visually distinguish the opened and closed states of the device (1). One suitable color for the inner cap (5) is "safety yellow".
When in use, hold the container (2) with one hand while holding the reservoir (12) firmly with the other hand and twist or press down until the ridge (15) engages the recess (10) (Figure 3). By this operation, the blade (20) pierces the septum (21). Remove the dust cap from the reservoir (12). Then liquid reservoir (12) is placed on the eye socket of infecting, by squeezing the side of container (2), fluid can flow in liquid reservoir (12) by conduit (7) and wash eyes through plate (17). As the fluid is sprayed upwards through the perforated plate (17), the user's head need only be tilted forward, not backward. All unused or thus used fluid is drained to the outside of the container (2) through the drain hole (19), thus eliminating the possibility of contaminated fluid returning to the eye during flushing. If the inner cap (5) has a different color than the surrounding components, the reservoir (12) can be sized so that when the device (1) is in the "unopened" or ready-to-use position, the inner cap (5) The part to the bottom is clearly visible, while the bottom (14) of the reservoir (12) hides the part from the middle to the bottom from view when the device has been opened for use.
The device of the present invention can then provide a fully assembled device, filled with the appropriate formulation, and immediately capable of spraying the solution around the eye sockets to flush out the irritant before beginning to wash the eyes. As a sealing mechanism, the dosing potion remains uncontaminated over a long shelf life, does not require constant monitoring of its suitability, and can be opened and used by a single person. If deemed necessary, the entire device may be discarded after use or sterilized and refilled with a solution and sealed for later use. A particularly important advantage of the present invention is that it is used without having to turn it upside down to feed the flushing formulation by gravity, as with prior art devices.
It is emphasized that the embodiment described above is only an example of various aspects of the invention, and that various modifications and changes may be made without departing from the basic principles of the invention as defined in the following claims.
