Abstract

A method and system for triggering hard handoff of a call from a CDMA network cell operating on a first frequency to a cell operating on at least one second frequency or in an AMPS network are disclosed. In a departure from the art, a boundary sector handoff trigger is implemented in two stages. The first stage of the trigger occurs when the active set of a mobile unit consists only of pilots identified as boundary pilots; that is, the active set comprises a ''boundary active set''. Once the requirements for the first stage are satisfied, a second stage of the boundary sector trigger of the present invention is enabled. During the second stage, a round-trip delay (''RTD'') of communications between the mobile unit and the BTS to which it is nearest is monitored and once the RTD exceeds a predetermined threshold, the trigger is complete and handoff processing continues with target selection and handoff execution.

Description

The boundary sector direct-cut operation triggers
Invention field
The present invention relates generally to cellular communications network, more particularly, relate to and a kind ofly trigger calling from being operated in a sub-district direct-cut operation on the frequency to the method that is operated in the sub-district on another frequency.
Background of invention
In cell phone system, the coverage is divided into the sub-district, and each sub-district can also further be divided into the sector. Each sub-district provides service by an independent base transceiver subsystem (" BTS "), and each base station is connected with a mobile switching centre (" MSC ") by a base station controller (" BSC ") and suitable hardware link.Travelling carriage by setting up a radio frequency (" RF ") with near BTS thus link is connected with MSC.
At present, there are several dissimilar honeycomb access technologies to be used to realize a cellular communications network, for example comprise the code division multiple access access (" CDMA ") that time division multiple access inserts (" TDMA "), Advanced Mobile Phone Service (" AMPS ") and upgrades. In CDMA net, single radio frequency is used by many travelling carriages simultaneously, and each travelling carriage has " sign indicating number " of an appointment, be used on this frequency it specific business decipher. In contrast, in TDMA and AMPS net, each travelling carriage is specified on the different radio frequencies and communicates.
Its distinctive pilot signal is constantly exported in each sector of a CDMA net.Travelling carriage can pass through institute pilot transmitted signal distinguishing sector, can also determine the intensity of pilot signal by measuring Carrier interference ratio (" C/I ") on it.Whether pilot frequency intensity can indicate travelling carriage can use the sector of contact with it to set up communication.
Well-knownly be, can in a cellular communications network, communicate by letter in order to make travelling carriage, must set up several links, comprise between radio frequency (" RF ") link, BTS and the base station controller (" BSC ") between travelling carriage and the base transceiver subsystem (" BTS ") and the hardware link between a BSC and the mobile switching centre (" MSC ").At work, when travelling carriage from a BTS when the 2nd BTS roams, the RF link between a travelling carriage and the BTS last with faint to the communication that can't support between the two, final connection interruption causes ongoing dropped calls.Obviously, this is not a kind of ideal results.
For fear of this problem, when travelling carriage during, will between travelling carriage and MSC, set up a new communication path near the 2nd BTS, comprise RF link between travelling carriage and the 2nd BTS and the hardware link between the 2nd BTS and the MSC.At this moment, travelling carriage will finish and the communicating by letter an of BTS, and beginning is communicated by letter with the 2nd BTS's.
Although in the above-described embodiments, first and second BTS are connected with a MSC, will be appreciated that BTS also can be connected with more than one MSC, and these MSC are connected to each other by suitable link again. And first and second BTS can be in two independently in the cellular communications network, for example respectively in a CDMA and AMPS net, or use in each CDMA net of different operating frequency.
Mobile Termination is commonly called " switching " with the process of communicating by letter, beginning to communicate by letter with another BTS of a BTS.Switching special case set forth above is called as " direct-cut operation ", because the link between a travelling carriage and the BTS stopped before the link establishment between travelling carriage and the BTS.Direct-cut operation is in early cellular telecommunication art, for example adopts among the AMPS that communicates for the different radio frequency of each travelling carriage appointment. In contrast, in the CDMA net, can realize " soft handover ", promptly the second communication link was set up before first communication link termination, because identical frequency band is used in all communications in the CDMA net.Other details relevant with the CDMA environmental specification is at TIA/EIA/IS-95-A, and " travelling carriage-base station compatibility standard that is used for dual mode wideband spread spectrum cellular " (hereinafter referred to as " IS-95 ") has description, and the document is in this is bonded to, with for referencial use.
In all cellular telecommunication art, switching comprises three steps, comprises " triggering ", " target selection " and " execution ".Handover trigger is meant the incident that starts hand-off process. For example, in the CDMA soft handover, when being higher than a threshold value " T_ADD ", the new strength of pilot channels of travelling carriage reception just produced a kind of handover trigger.Target selection refers to determine which sub-district or sector are well-suited for the processing of this call service most.Starting target selection by handover trigger handles. In the CDMA soft handover, target selection is handled and is solidificated in the travelling carriage, and the response handover trigger is carried out automatically.Switch execution and refer to call out reality by the processing of cellular communications network to Target Transformation, it comprises activities such as hardware/software resources distribution.
The mechanism that realizes soft handover in the CDMA net has intactly been described in the IS-95 communication standard; But soft handover can only be realized between the CDMA sub-district of supporting identical CDMA frequency allocation plan.Sometimes wish between sub-district, to switch with different frequency allocative decision. For example, provide the different operators of cdma service may adopt different CDMA frequency allocation plans; Therefore, the direct-cut operation that just need carry out between the CDMA frequency at the travelling carriage of roaming between these operators is called out with maintenance.
In CDMA net, need to other situation that direct-cut operation is carried out in calling comprise from a CDMA multiple carrier overlay area to a single carrier CDMA overlay area switch call and from a CDMA net to the switch call of a non-CDMA net.
The IS-95 communication standard is not described any mechanism that realizes the CDMA direct-cut operation.Different with the CDMA soft handover, in the CDMA direct-cut operation, travelling carriage can not provide some information of being convenient to switch to the CDMA net. Therefore, must in CDMA network facility, set up special intelligence, and must do special deployment and consider, so that this direct-cut operation is worked reliably.
Therefore, we needed be a kind of will the calling from being operated in the method that sub-district direct-cut operation on the first frequency is operated in the sub-district on the second frequency in the cellular communications network in the cellular communications network.
Summary of the invention
Therefore, the invention provides and a kind ofly be used for trigger calling out from being operated in first frequency (f1) on a CDMA sub-district direct-cut operation to being operated in second frequency (f2) on the method and system of sub-district.Be with the different of prior art, be called as the existing Soft Handover Algorithm that two stage handover trigger that boundary sector triggers have used travelling carriage to realize indirectly hereinafter and trigger direct-cut operation.
In a preferred embodiment, the overlay cells that is made of biparting district is to disposing along border between the frequency between two networks, hereinafter this sub-district to calling " border cell ".Sector in these border cells hereinafter is called " boundary sector ", and it is orientated over against border between frequency. Each border cell is furnished with two BTS, and on the frequency that is operated in CDMA net, another is operated on the frequency of other network. In one embodiment, the pilot tone that is associated with boundary sector is identified as the border cell pilot tone in the database of BSC.
In communication, when travelling carriage border roaming and entering between frequency need carry out direct-cut operation regional, when when travelling carriage active set that the pilot set that sector that travelling carriage is communicated by letter with it is associated is formed only is included in those pilot tones that are marked as the border pilot tone in the database, the phase I (" stage 1 ") that boundary sector of the present invention triggers is so just produce.Only the active set that is made of the border pilot tone is called as one " border active set ".
In case the requirement in stage 1 is met, the second stage (" stage 2 ") that boundary sector of the present invention triggers just is activated. In the stage 2, BSC monitors travelling carriage and delays (" RTD ") with the round trip of communicating by letter between its nearest BTS.RTD measures with doing a travelling carriage and a rough estimate of distance between the BTS recently. In case BTS determines tested RTD and surpassed a predetermined threshold of stipulating in the database, triggering is finished, and hand-off process continues to carry out target selection and switch carrying out according to usual manner.Should be noted that if engrave when entering after the stage 2 and start any before switching when promptly the active set of travelling carriage is not a border active set (if) do not satisfied in the requirement in stage 1, the boundary sector triggering is invalid.
In aspect of invention, boundary sector triggers and to be used to trigger calling and to be operated in the sub-district that is operated in sub-district direct-cut operation to the two CDMA net on the first frequency on the second frequency in the CDMA net.In aspect another of invention, boundary sector triggers and to be used for triggering the sub-district of calling from a sub-district direct-cut operation of CDMA net to non-CDMA net.
The technological merit of invention is that it can make call switch to a cellular communications network that is operated on the second frequency the net of the CDMA on being operated in first frequency reliably.
Another technological merit of invention is that it can make call switch to a single carrier zone of cellular communications network coverage reliably from a multicarrier zone of cellular communications network coverage.
Invention also has a technological merit to be owing to switch when carrying out forward direction and oppositely the RF link is very firm, and promptly near subdistrict position, therefore reliability and the speech quality of calling out is all very high.
It is to have prevented " table tennis " phenomenon that invention also has a technological merit, promptly call out switch to another frequency from a frequency after, almost return the situation of first frequency again immediately, because from f1To f2The switching origination point spatially with from f2To f1Switching origination point difference.

The description of preferred embodiment
Fig. 1 has illustrated borderline region between a frequency between the first cellular communications network 10a and the second cellular communications network 10b, and wherein 10a is at first frequency (f1) going up work, 10b is at the second frequency (f that is different from the first cellular communications network 10a frequency2) go up and work.As shown in Figure 1, the first cellular communications network 10a comprises some sub-districts, for the sake of simplicity, has only represented wherein three C1, C2 and C3 among the figure. Each sub-district C1, C2 and C3 are by being positioned at the subdistrict position place and in frequency f1Each base transceiver subsystem (" BTS1 ") of last work provides service; Specifically, BTS1 12 is sub-district C1 service, and BTS1 14 is sub-district C2 service, and BTS1 16 is sub-district C3 service. Each BTS1 12,14,16 is connected by first base station controller of representing with code name 18 among hardware link 19a, 19b, 19c and Fig. 1 (" BSC1 ") respectively.BSC1 18 is connected by first mobile switching centre (" MSC1 ") that represents with code name 20 among a hardware link and Fig. 1.In a current preferred embodiment, BSC1 18 comprises a database 21, to be used for hereinafter with purpose of description.
Equally, the second cellular communications network 10b comprises some sub-districts, for the sake of simplicity, three sub-district C4, C5 and C6 have only been represented among the figure, two sub-districts wherein, specifically be C5 and C6 to have constituted overlay cells right with the sub-district C2 of the first cellular communications network 10a and C3 respectively, to be used for hereinafter with the purpose of describing in detail. Each sub-district C4, C5 and C6 provide service by each base transceiver subsystem that is positioned at the subdistrict position place and work on frequency f 2 (" BTS2 "); Specifically, BTS2 22 is sub-district C4 service, and BTS2 24 is sub-district C5 service, and BTS2 26 is sub-district C6 service. Each BTS2 22,24,26 is connected by second base station controller of representing with code name 28 among hardware link 29a, 29b, 29c and Fig. 1 (" BSC2 ") respectively.BSC2 is connected by the 2nd MSC (" MSC2 ") that represents with code name 30 among a hardware link and Fig. 1.In a preferred embodiment, BSC2 28 comprises a database 31, to be used for hereinafter with purpose of description.
According to characteristics of the present invention, therefore sub-district C2, C3, C5 and C6 are called as " border cell " owing on the border that is between cellular communications network 10a and the 10b.As border cell, sub-district C2, C3, C5 and C6 are the sub-districts in biparting district, its orientation is over against border 34 between the frequency between cellular communications network 10a and the 10b, makes border 34 actual being in a straight line between the every pair of sector of border cell C2, C3, C5 and C6 and frequency.Specifically, sub-district C2 comprises sector 401 and 40r, and sub-district C3 comprises sector 421 and 42r, and sub-district C5 comprises sector 441 and 44r, and sub-district C6 comprises sector 461 and 46r.According to characteristics of the present invention, the pilot tone of sector 40r and 42r is identified as the boundary sector pilot tone in database 21, and the pilot tone of sector 441 and 461 is identified as the boundary sector pilot tone in database 31.For the ease of explanation, non-border cell C1 and C4 are represented as unidirectional cell, but it also can use the cell configuration (for example three or six sectors) of any other type.
In communication, when originally being positioned at sub-district C1 and moving by direction shown in the arrow A with BTS1 12 mobile stations communicating 50, it has entered the soft handover between the sector 42r of sub-district C1 and sub-district C3, this means that sub-district C1 (non-border cell) and sector 42r (boundary sector) are the active sets of travelling carriage 50; Therefore, this active set is not a border active set. When travelling carriage 50 continuation were moved by direction shown in the arrow A, it can arrive the position that can only communicate by letter with sector 42r and/or any other boundary sector at last. Therefore, travelling carriage 50 active set at this moment is exactly a border active set, makes that the condition in boundary sector handover trigger stage 1 is satisfied, and the stage 2 is activated.
When travelling carriage 50 continuation were moved by direction shown in the arrow A, with the communication RTD between monitoring travelling carriage 50 and the nearest BTS, this BTS was BTS1 16 in this example. When RTD surpassed a predetermined threshold, the condition in boundary sector handover trigger stage 2 was satisfied, and target selection is handled and begun to carry out.
In described currently preferred embodiment, will be appreciated that: the cell deployment scheme can make target selection handle to go selects sector 46r by BTS2 26 services. In case target (being sector 46r) is selected, BSC1 18 just will start from f1Sector 42r in the overlay area is to f2The direct-cut operation of sector 46r in the overlay area.Travelling carriage 50 continues to move by direction shown in the arrow A, enters and f2On the soft handover of sub-district C4.
Should be noted that the second cellular communications network 10b can be a CDMA or non-cdma network. And, although the BSC1 18 that describes shown in the figure and according to Fig. 1 and BSC2 28 are connected with different MSC, will be appreciated that they also can be connected with same MSC.
With reference to figure 2, the operation that boundary sector of the present invention triggers will be described in more detail below.Instep 200, determine whether the active set of the travelling carriage 50 on the effective traffic channel is border active sets.If not, handle and returnstep 200; Otherwise, continue execution in step 202.Instep 202, measure the communication RTD between travelling carriage 50 and the nearest with it BTS.Instep 204, in the determiningstep 202 the RTD that surveys whether greater than a predetermined threshold. If not, handle and returnstep 200; Otherwise, continue execution instep 206, start and switch and beginning target selection processing.
Fig. 1 has illustrated and has switched to the situation of another single carrier zone (the second cellular communications network 10b) calling out from a single carrier zone (the first cellular communications network 10a).But, will be appreciated that sometimes may be between a multicarrier zone and single carrier zone cut-grafting call out or to the switch call of an AMPS net.For example, as shown in Figure 3, in the heavy traffic area, with first frequency (f1) the CDMA net that is operated on the second frequency (f2) for one of the first cdma network deploy of operating frequency is very favourable. As shown in Figure 3, coverage diagram has been represented the single carrier (f by the covering of CDMA net1) zone, represent by single-carrier cell C10, C11 and C12 that in Fig. 3 this figure has also represented one by the common two carrier wave (f that cover of first and second CDMA net1And f2) regional core, in Fig. 3, represent by two carrier cell C13, C14, C15 and C16.Will be appreciated that each single-carrier cell C10, C11 and C12 provide service by single BTS1, and each two carrier cell C13, C14, C15 and C16 provide service by two BTS, comprising BTS1 and BTS2.Another method is that two carrier cell C13, C14, C15 and C16 also can provide service by the single BTS with a plurality of carrier waves. The two carrier cells that meet the boundary with single carrier are called as border cell, and this is two carrier cell C13, C15 and C16 in this example.According to the description that Fig. 1 did, border cell C13, C15 and C16 are sub-districts, biparting district as above, and it is orientated over against single carrier/multicarrier border, yet will be appreciated that sub-district C13, C15 and C16 can be required omnidirectional, three sectors or six sector cells.
When roaming in the C16 of sub-district and in frequency f2On thetravelling carriage 300 that communicates from core to the single carrier zone, when promptly moving by direction shown in the arrow B, the effective call of travelling carriage must switch to f on the frequency1In this case, boundary sector triggers basis and operates with identical mode mentioned above, and as noted earlier, two carrier cell C13, C15 and C16 are defined as border cell. Will be appreciated that, in this optional embodiment, do not require additional firmware, because border cell C13, C15 and C16 have comprised the appropriate hardware that service is provided for two kinds of frequencies, i.e. BTS1 and BTS2.
Although represented and described the illustrative embodiment of invention, in above announcement, can carry out other change, variation and alternative. Therefore, should be understood widely and according to the mode consistent accessory claim with invention scope.
