The invention relates to the field of electronic devices with multiple display screens. More specifically, the present invention relates to systems and methods for enabling one screen to control another screen.
Background technique
Many portable gaming devices have dual screens to enhance game playability. FIG. 1 shows a prior art portable game device 100 . The portable game device 100 includes a first screen 108 and a second screen 110 . Generally, one or both screens are touch sensitive and can be actuated by the user's finger or by using the stylus 115 . The gaming device is selectively positionable in an open position or a closed position via a hinge 109 which physically divides the first screen 108 and the second screen 110 so that they cannot be adjacent. In addition, gaming device 100 includes a set of primary direction indicators 120, function buttons 130, and menu/settings buttons 140, all of which are physical buttons or switches that are fixed in position and size. Since the main direction indicator 120 , the function button 130 and the menu/settings button 140 are all physical buttons, the device 100 must be made wider to accommodate them next to the second screen 110 . Thus, the size of the second screen 110 is necessarily limited. Additionally, since the main direction indicators 120, function buttons 130, and menu/settings buttons 140 are fixed, their position, size, or sensitivity to pressure cannot be configured by the user. In addition, since the hinge 109 divides the first screen 108 and the second screen 110, they cannot be adjoined as one display device.
Contents of the invention
Embodiments of the presently claimed invention relate to systems and methods for implementing an electronic gaming device having dual touch-sensitive displays adjacent to each other when the device is turned on. In contrast to prior art solutions, two screens have the look and feel of one screen, enabling many embodiments not possible in the prior art. Portions of the first and second screens may be configured automatically or by the user as appropriate controllers for games displayed on the remaining portions of the first and second screens. For example, a first screen may display a game, and a second screen may be configured as a controller. Alternatively, part of the first screen can display the game, and in addition to the second screen, the rest of the first screen can also be configured as a controller. Also alternatively, all of the first screen and part of the second screen may display the game, and the remainder of the second screen may be the controller. The controller can have any function control buttons and primary orientation, all user configurable for size and position. To sense pressure, spreading the user's finger across one of the screens triggers a concentric contact area on the function button or the main direction. As explained in more detail below, the concentric contact area is associated with an amount of pressure that may be user configurable, prompted by the device, or automatically configurable. Advantageously, pressure can be sensed by standard capacitive LED based screens without resorting to expensive and inefficient pressure sensitive touch screens.
In a first aspect of the invention, an electronic gaming device includes a first touch-sensitive screen and a second touch-sensitive screen adjacent to the first touch-sensitive screen, wherein the second touch-sensitive screen is automatically A suitable game controller for the game displayed on at least part of the touch-sensitive screen. The following figures illustrate features of specific embodiments of the presently claimed invention. Throughout the following figures, the same reference numerals refer to the same or similar elements. The following examples are intended to illustrate the features of the presently claimed invention. The invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments.
220。Figures 2A and 2B illustrate a dual screen gaming device 200 that displays a game and also has a controller configured for the game. FIG. 2A shows a gaming device 200 displaying a game on the entirety of a first touch-sensitive screen 201, and a controller is configured on a second touch-sensitive screen 202. Preferably, the first touch-sensitive screen 201 and the second touch-sensitive screen 202 are rotatably coupled by a hinge 210 so that in the open position, as shown in FIG. 2A, the first touch-sensitive screen 201 and the second touch-sensitive screen 202 are mutually are directly adjacent and appear as one screen to the user. The dividing line 203 can be artificially positioned to isolate the controller portion from the game display portion of the first touch-sensitive screen 201 and the second touch-sensitive screen 202 to give the user the well-known look and feel of a handheld gaming device. However, as will be explained below, the dividing line 203 may be moved as desired or necessary. The second touch-sensitive screen 202 is configured as a controller dedicated to the game displayed on the first touch-sensitive screen 201 . The controller includes well known features such as primary direction indicators 210 and function buttons 215 . In the example provided, the first touch sensitive screen 201 displays a game of bowling. Primary direction indicator 210 may move character 204 about bowling lane 205 , for example. Function button 215 may, for example, control the pull-back and release of bowling ball 204A. The function button 215 need not be a one-touch button. For example, a swipe motion may be invoked across a field on the second touch-sensitive screen 202 , where the entire field is a function button 215 . In the example provided in Figures 2A and 2B, the game is relatively simple requiring fewer controls. Thus it is possible to enlarge the game display area and minimize the controller area. To this end, FIG. 2B shows a device 200 configured such that both the entirety of the first touch-sensitive display 201 and part of the second touch-sensitive display 202 simultaneously and cooperatively display the game, while no part of the second touch-sensitive display 202 The section that shows the game is configured as a game controller. For example, the user can choose from two menus and a settings button 217, and a drop-down menu 220 appears. Pull-down menu 220 includes several selections, such as "Show". Within "Display", the user can select "Zoom in" or "Maximize" to maximize or enlarge the display area. In addition, function button 215A has been reconfigured as a sliding motion corresponding to the release of bowling ball 204A by character 204 . A user may swipe function button 215A in the direction of the arrow to mimic the motion of rolling a bowling ball. Also instead, the function button 215B can be moved into the display area in an area that is not critical to game play. In the example of FIG. 2B, function button 215B may be moved to the right of lane 205 without interfering with standard game play. When the display area is maximized, the dividing line 203 moves to a new position 203A to continue dividing between the display area and the controller. In some embodiments, line 203A is moved manually. For example, "Manual" is selected from drop down menu 220 and the user can drag and drop line 203A to a location to have the desired game display area and desired controller area. Also instead, the user can drag and drop the line 203A without invoking the drop-down menu 220 .
FIG. 3A illustrates an example method of displaying commands for mobile controller functions. Likewise, the dual-screen gaming device has a first touch-sensitive screen 301 and a second touch-sensitive screen 302 rotatably coupled by a hinge 303 . The first touch sensitive screen 301 displays a golf game. A second touch-sensitive screen is configured as a controller. A user may invoke a menu or settings button 317 to show a drop-down menu 320 . Among the example selections in drop down menu 320, the user may select "Move", and then may select a single button by pressing "Select" or simply by "Move All". By selecting "Select," the user can put the device 300 into a paused state with respect to the game, and the user can then drag and place the function button 315, the main direction 310, or Any of the settings/menu buttons 317.
In some embodiments, a secondary game display is desired. To this end, FIG. 3B shows the dual-screen gaming device 300 of FIG. 3A , wherein part of the first touch-sensitive screen 301 is configured as a first display area 350 and part of the second touch-sensitive screen 302 is configured as a second display area 352 . The remaining area between the first display area 350 and the second display area 352 is configured as a control area 351 . In this example, the controller area 351 includes a lower portion of the first touch-sensitive display 301 and an upper portion of the second touch-sensitive display 302 . Controller area 351 may however be located entirely within either touch sensitive screen. The first display area 350 and the second display area 352 each display a different aspect of the game. In the example provided, the first display area 350 shows a golf ball that has landed in the putting green. The second display area 352 shows the entire trajectory of the ball 304 as it travels the length of the lane. In a second example not shown, the first display area 350 may show a character in a "first person shooter" style game, while the second display area 352 may show a map of the character's location. The dividing line where the hinge 303 is located is provided to show the physical division between the first touch sensitive screen 301 and the second touch sensitive screen 302 . Due to the highly configurable nature of the controller 351, any one or more of the primary direction indicator 310 or the function buttons 315 can be divided between the first touch-sensitive screen 301 and the second touch-sensitive screen 302 without affecting the user's experience. . Instead, the second display area 352 can display any other useful information. For example, dual screen gaming device 300 may also include telephone or smartphone capabilities. To this end, the second display area 352 may show the time, weather, incoming calls, or any other display feature typically available on a smartphone.
4A and 4B illustrate the versatility of the dual-screen gaming device 400 with respect to game play difficulty levels and the adaptability and configurability of the controller to suit the needs of the user. Both Figures 4A and 4B illustrate a game of curling displayed in display areas 450 and 450', respectively. For example, Figure 4A shows a game of curling in easy or beginner mode. Since the game is relatively easy to play, fewer controls are required, and the controller portion 451 uses all or less of the second touch-sensitive display 402 because only two function buttons 415′ are required and the display portion 450 uses the first touch-sensitive screen 401 of all. However, as game play becomes more advanced, the user may be prompted to assume greater control over the character. Thus, more functions are required and thus more function buttons 415' are required. To this end, FIG. 4B shows the device 400 automatically configured in advanced settings. There are six function buttons 415' instead of two. Since more space is needed for greater control, the display area 450' in the advanced version is part of the first touch-sensitive screen 401, while the control area 451' has been grown to cover the entirety of the second touch-sensitive screen 402 and the first Part of the touch sensitive screen 401 . Additionally, it should be understood that any one or more of the function, location, or size of any of the control features of FIGS. 2A-4B may be configured by the user to provide a personalized gaming experience.
In some embodiments, two players can simultaneously play a game on a dual-screen gaming device 500 as shown in FIG. 5 . Device 500 is configured with a first control area 550 for a first user, a display area 551 and a second control area 552 for a second user. In the example provided in Figure 5, a boxing game is displayed in display area 551, and naturally a game such as a boxing game is available for two players to play. The first control area includes a first cardinal direction 510 and a first set of function buttons 515 . The first user can configure the first cardinal direction 510 and the first set of function buttons 515 as desired. Similarly, the second control area includes a second cardinal direction 510' and a second set of function buttons 515'. The second user can configure the second cardinal direction 510' and the second set of function buttons 515' as desired. As a default setting, the first control area 550 and the second control area 553 are mirror images of each other for identical game play.
In some applications, it is desirable for the device to sense pressure for game play. Simulated responses to pressure rather than binary touch/no-touch responses due to presses on function buttons can enhance game playability and user experience. However, prior art solutions for pressure sensitive touch screens are costly and consume unacceptable amounts of current. However, one aspect of the present disclosure relates to a method for sensing pressure on a standard capacitive touch sensitive screen. Referring now to FIG. 6A, a domain 600 is shown. Field 600 may be anywhere on any of the touch-sensitive screens described in the figures and corresponding text above. Field 600 is a touch sensitive field with function buttons 610 . Function button 610 may be any function related to game play or other usage. As in the previous embodiments, the function buttons 610 may be defined by the user in terms of function, size and layout. In the embodiment of Figures 6A and 6B, an additional dimension of user configurability and functionality is included in the form of concentric contact areas 601-605 corresponding to pressure. Referring now to FIG. 6B , finger 620 is shown pressing onto the surface of screen 630 at contact point 615 . During an initial or light contact, fingers 620 are slightly spread at contact point 615 and only touch sensitive first contact area 601 . When the user desires a greater response from the function button 610, they press the finger 620 harder resulting in a larger contact area 617 between the finger 620 and the surface 630. As more pressure from the user is applied, a greater point of contact 618 is formed. Finally, maximum contact 619 is created to define maximum concentric contact area 605 . Advantageously, such an embodiment can be implemented on standard capacitive touch screens currently used in most touch sensitive applications. Referring back to FIG. 6A , the concentric contact areas 601 - 605 need not correspond exactly to the boundaries of the function button 610 . Since the user will initially touch the center of the function button 610 , the spread of the finger 620 will mostly occur outside the boundaries of the function button 610 .
In some embodiments, the user can enter a "pressure sensing" test mode in which the device prompts the user to apply light, moderate, and maximum pressure to a prescribed field. The device then calculates the concentric pressure areas 601-605 with respect to the function button 610. Instead, the user may manually configure the concentric pressure regions 601-605 as desired. Also instead, concentric pressure zones are preprogrammed into the device. Although a function button 610 is shown in the example provided, the home direction or any other button may also be pressure sensitive in the devices described in Figures 6A and 6B.
