In isolated use, an "engaging member" is displaceable between a fully displaced disposition and a fully retracted disposition. When employed with an "engagable means", the engaging member is displaceable between an operative disposition, a disposition in which the engaging member finds itself when engaged with the engagable means and an inoperative disposition removed from the said engagement. In many locks, the operative disposition corresponds with the fully displaced disposition but in some cases the engageable means acts to limit the displacement of the engaging member, and the inoperative disposition may correspond with the retracted disposition. Within this specification, fully displaced will embrace substantially fully displaced as the operative disposition may in some cases be, and retracted disposition will embrace substantially fully retracted as the inoperative disposition may well be. For example, in the inoperative configuration an engaging member comprising a bolt may be withdrawn from the aperture in a substantially planar member and in the operative configuration the bott extend into the aperture the operative disposition generally corresponding to a fully displaced (fully extended) bolt while the inoperative disposition generally corresponds to a fully retracted bolt.
"Latching" means displacement of an engaging member into engagement with the "engagable means" under the action of biasing means.
A "bolt" is a member capable of displacing to protrude from a casing.
"Unlatching" means withdrawal of the engaging member or bolt from engagement with the engagable means, and it may comprise withdrawal of a bolt from the aperture of a plate. An "operating lever" is a lever or knob that is hand COMS ID No: ARCS-189408 Received by IP Australia: Time 13:44 Date 2008-05-06 FROM AUSTRAIL LOCK PHONE NO. 61396865755 May. 06 2008 3:30PN P7 00 0 operable to cause the engaging member to become unlatched and it may comprise I\N a "push" that is pushed upon by hand to effect withdrawal.
o "Deadlocking" means to configure the lock to restrain the engaging member from being displaced from the fully displaced configuration by external forces and it In 5 may comprise restraining the bolt in a fully extended position.
S"Remote lock" means a locking means disposed from the lock that includes a Sremote engaging member that is operably connected to the lock (often there is an C upper and a lower remote bolt situated above and below the lock) 00 O A "window screen" means a wing comprising a hollow framed and an in-fill 0 10 that may comprise a grill, a mesh or woven stainless steel where the hollow within the frame is comparatively small in depth and in width. In general wings are supported adjacent an opening; the wing having a closing edge that in the closed position, is adjacent an element that helps define the extent of the opening; the lock being mounted relative to this closing edge and this may comprise mounting a lock body within the frame that defines the closing edge.
A "single cylinder" comprises a substantially conventional lock cylinder comprising a separate subassembly that includes a key operable barrel within a cylinder housing.
A "double-cylinder" comprises a substantially conventional double lock cylinder comprising a separate subassembly that includes opposed coaxially supported barrels each operably connected to the same angularly displaceable "first cam" having a "first cam arm" characterized by a "free end" that extends radially to a "peripheral surface" defined in part by a common radial distance from the first cam pivotal axis.
A "free rotation single cylinder" includes a barrel operably connected with free movement to a first cam to enable the first cam to be displaced by the barrel from an undisplaced disposition to a displaced disposition and subsequently reversed to the undisplaced position enabling key removal; a "free rotation-doublecylinder" is configured such that each barrel is connected with free movement to the same first cam such that the cam is free (between limits) to be angularly displaced while the barrels remain undisplaced.
Free rotation cylinders are commonly used in security door locks in Australia to enable the cam to be displaced by either barrel to a locking configuration and then the barrel to be reverse rotated to the undisplaced position enabling key COMS ID No: ARCS-189408 Received by IP Australia: Time 13:44 Date 2008-05-06 FROM AUSTRARL LOCK PHONE NO. :61396865755 May. 06 2008 03:30PM P8 6 removal while leaving the first cam in the locking position. In some forms of IND cylinders, one barrel is replaced by a hand operable turn knob; in some cylinders the O cylinder housing comprises part of the handle back-plate.
Embodiments of the present inventions will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: O Description of the Drawings o Fig I is an exploded isometric view showing a hollow frame member prepared to receive a lock body and handle assembly, O Fig 2 is a schematic side view showing an undisplaced operating slide and 010 push, Fig 3 is the lock of Fig 2 but with the operating slide in the operative configuration Fig 4 is a schematic side view of the lock of Fig 2 (and showing the configuration a first cam arm would assume if it were present), Fig 5 is a schematic side view of the lock of Fig 3 (and showing the configuration a first cam arm would assume if it were present), Fig 6 is a schematic side of a lock that includes a cylinder with the operating slide in the operative configuration Fig 7 is a schematic isometric view of a lock employing Bowden cable, ig 9 8 is the lock of Fig 7 showing the casing construction, Fig 9 is an isometric view of a remote lock employing Bowden cable, in which the bolt is actuated to the extended position by movement of the inner cable towards the remote lock, Fig 10 is a schematic isometric view of a lock employing rods, Fig 11 is an isometric view of a remote lack employing rods in which the bolt is actuated to the extended position by movement of the rod towards the remote lock.
Fig 12 is a schematic side view of a lock having a bolt connected directly to an operating slide in the undisplaced configuration, Fig 13 is the lock of Fig 12 with the operating slide in the operative configuration.
The inventions described within include locks characterized by an 'engaged configuration' in which an engaging means (that may comprise a bolt) and engagable means (that may comprise a substantially planar member with an ARCS-i 89408 Received by IP Australia: lime 13:44 Date 2008-05-06 FROM AUSTRAL LOCK PHONE NO. 61396865755 May. 06 2008 03:31PM P9 7 0 aperture) are connected to be restrained against relative displacement. Where the ,0 engaging member is within a lock body that is attached relative to the displaceable o wing and the engageable means is attached relative to an element that defines in part the opening adjacent to which the wing is supported, this connection restrains In 5 the wing from being displaced (relative to the opening) in an opening direction.
SWhile in the engaged configuration, some locks may be further configured to be Sdeadlocked.
Cl The inventions described within ("inventions") include a novel locking and 00 Soperating means for locks and in particular for locks for window screens that in general, include a hand operable pushi, supported within an interior handle assembly 2 that is supported in relation to the interior side 3 of the wing.
Associated with a push 1 is an angularly displaceable push arm 4 that extends sideways from the pivotal axis 5 of the push 1 so that its free end 9 extends into the hollow 6 of the frame 7 comprising the closing edge of the wing by extending through an aperture 8 in the side of the frame. The free end 9 may overlap an operating slide 10 to locate within a slot 11 (disposed orthogonally to the direction of operating slide movement) in a side of the operating slide to operably couple the push and operating slide together whereby angular displacement of the push causes rectilinear displacement of the operating slide and rectilinear displacement of the operating slide causes the push to rotate. The pushi and push arm 4 share the pivotal axis 5 that is parallel the locus of bolt movement and spaced from the surface of the wing. The axis finds concrete form in a shaft 13 that extends between spaced shoulders 14 of a backplate (comprising part of the interior handle assembly) between which the push 1 is suspended from a hinged end 15 through which the shaft extends. From the hinged end, an angularly displaceable lever 16 extends to be accessible by hand and whereby displacement of the lever towards the wing causes withdrawal of all bolts.
The free end 9 is operably connected to one or more bolts 20 each displaceable between a fully extended position where it protrudes from the frame and a retracted position where It is substantially within the frame.
In some forms as shown in Fig 12 and 13, the operating slide 10 (comprising a rectilinearly displaceable member that is elongated in the direction of movement) is supported in a casing 21 and a bolt 22 of solid box like construction is supported between finned extensions 19 of a side wall of the casing 21; the bolt being COMS ID No: ARCS-189408 Received by IP Australia: Time 13:44 Date 2008-05-06 FROM RUSTRAL LOCK PHONE NO. 61396865755 May. 06 2008 03:31PM 8

displaceable such that a leading portion is displaceable between a fully retracted O ~position where it is within the casing and a fully extended position where it protrudes o from the casing. The bolt displaces in a direction orthogonal to the rectilinear displacement of the operating slide that has a leading end 23 that overlaps the bolt and it has a sideways protruding pin 24 that extends into an elongated continuous oprofiled recess 25 in a side of the bolt; the recess opening lying within a plane that ois parallel to a side of the wing. The bolt has a rearwardly disposed (in relation to the l locus of bolt displacement) locking landing 26 connected by an angled channel 00 o27 to an unlocking landing 28. When the operating slide is in an operative configuration disposed towards the bolt, the bolt is fully displaced and the pin occupies the locking landing 26 and when in the undisplaced configuration the pin occupies the unlocking landing 28. In this form, displacement of the operating slide (from the undisplaced position) towards the bolt causes the pin 24 to slide up the angled channel 27 to displace the bolt to the fully extended position at which point, the pin enters the locking landing 26 to deadlock the bolt. The bolt is similarly displaced to the retracted position by movement of the operating slide to the undisplaced position.
The operating means of the lock described immediately above may further include a cylinder as described below in which case the operating slide is adapted to include a drive recess and the lock may be connected to one or a pair of remote locks by Bowden cable or rods as described below.
In other forms shown in Fig 4 to 6, (characterized by the inclusion of a control plunger and the omission of a bolt within casing 21), the interior handle assembly 2 is operably connected to one or more remote bolts by means including drive means that may comprise rod or inner Bowden cable. The free end 9 may be connected directly to an end of each drive member by a simple pivotal joint comprising a right angled return portion of the drive member within an aperture in the free end 9 or the lock may include a box like casing 21 having a front wall 30 on the front edge, a rear wall 31 on the back edge and a side wall 32, a lid 33 and upper and lower tabs 34 by which the casing is attache to the hollow frame. Within the front wall 30 of the casing there is an aperture 35 through which a control plunger 36 has passage to be displaceable between extended and retracted positions; the control plunger 36 is of a solid box like construction supported between finned extensions 19 of a side wall that also act to strengthen the casing.

The control plunger is outwardly biased and moveable by compression spring 39 that is held compressed 5 between the rear wall 31 and an inner end 40 of the plunger and inwardly moveable Sthrough engagement with an element that defines in part the extent of the opening o or through engagement with an engageable means attached to that element.
00 The control plunger rearwardly has a relatively raised shoulder 43 0 rearwardly disposed of a recess 44. Rearward (inward) movement of the control 0 10 plunger causes the shoulder 43 to be displaced from abutting a leading end 45 of the operating slide to bring the recess 44 into alignment with the leading end whereby to enabfe the leading end to enter into the recess 44 to facilitate further operating slide displacement.
In some embodiment the control plunger has a leading portion (that extends furtherest from the casing) that has a chamfered side 41 on the side that engages the element or engageable means to facilitate inward displacement by the engagement; in some forms, the chamfered portion is offset (in relation to an extended plunger) commencing from a landing 42 that extends sideways from a side of the plunger and in the same plane as the mouth 46 of the casing. The operating slide is supported within the casing 21 to be displaceable towards and away from the control plunger its leading end 45 having passage through an aperture 47 in the lower finned wall 48 to abut shoulder 43 or to enter recess 44.
In these forms, the undisplaced position of the operating slide corresponds with the leading end 45 abutting or being adjacent to the shoulder 43 and the operative configuration of the operating slide corresponds with the leading end being within the recess 44. The operating slide comprising a substantially laminar member that includes a rearward laminar extension that extends through an elongated rectangular slotted aperture 49 to comprise a protruding drive tab that includes a circular aperture 51 for each remote lock.
In one type of lock, the drive shoulder is operably connected to each remote lock by inner Bowden cable 52 that comprises an outer sheath 53 and the moveable inner cable 52 that may comprise hardened steel wire; the outer sheath supporting the cable to restrain it against buckling and to control the effective distance between the casing and remote lock casing to ensure that the length of the COMS ID No: ARCS-189408 Received by IP Australia: Time 13:44 Date 2008-05-06 FROM AUSTRAL LOCK PHONE NO. :61396865755 flay. 06 2008 03:32PM P12 displacement imparted to the cable by the lock body results in the same length displacement at the remote lock, The outer sheath is connected to the lock casing 0 by a sheath end 64 having sideways protruding sheath shoulders 55 that are received within opposed slotted recesses 56 to restrain the sheath against displacement relative to the casing 21. The other end of the sheath is attached to a remote lock casing 57 by sideways protruding sheath shoulders 58 that are O received within opposed slotted recesses 59 of the box like remote casing to restrain the sheath against longitudinal displacement relative to the casing, O The end of the inner cable adjacent to the lock body, includes a right angle 010 return portion 71 that passes through an aperture 51 while at the other end includes a similar return portion 72 that extends into an aperture 73 in the tree end 74 of a first arm 75 of an operating rocker 76 having a substantially cylindrical portion 77 having an axial aperture 78 that is supported about a shaft 79 that defines its pivotal axis and that comprises an orthogonal extension to the wall of the remote casing. The cylindrical portion is connected to a second arm having a free end 81 configured to act on a profiled trailing shoulder 82 (on which it acts in cam follower relationship to cause the bolt to displace towards the extended position) and to act on the rear shoulder 83 of the remote bolt (on which it acts in cam follower relationship to cause the bolt to displace towards retracted position) that is supported within the remote casing and having passage through an aperture U4 in the front wall 85 of the remote lock casing.
The lock is configured such that when the operating slide is in the operative configuration, the remote bolt is fully extended and independently deadlocked by the operating rocker by dint of the normal 86 to the surface of the trailing shoulder in contact with the free end 81 passes substantially through the pivotal axis of the operating rocker. The lock is furher configured such that when the operating slide is undisplaced, the remote bolt is retracted so as not to protrude from the remote casing, the free end is adjacent to the rear shoulder 83 on which it acts to cause the bolt to displace towards the retracted position.

In some forms that do not include a key operable cylinder, the operating slide may always be displaced to and from the operative configuration by actuation of the push.
In other forms, that do employ a free rotation cylinder 150 (either single or double), the operating slide includes a cam recess 131 or drive recess defined in part by a substantially orthogonal locking shoulder 132 spaced from a substantially parallel unlocking shoulder 133. The free rotation double cylinder described in the Definitions has an angularly displaceable cylinder cam arm 130 which locates within the drive recess 131. Within a second range of first cam movement, the first cam arm occupies the drive recess to operably couple the operating slide and first cam together whereby translational movement of the operating slide causes thefirst cam to angularly displace and angular displacement of the first cam causes the operating slide to translate. While in this coupled mode, the operating slide may be displaced to and from an operative configuration (corresponding to the lock being in a second COMS ID No: ARCS-189408 Received by IP Australia: Time 13:44 Date 2008-05-06 FROM AUSTRAL LOCK FROM PUSTRPL LOCK PHONE NO. 61396865755fly06280313PP5 Nay. 06 2008 03:33PM 13 0 locked configuration) by actuation of the push and by actuation of the first camn in IND response to key actuation of the cylinder. From this coupled configuration, the first 0 cam may be further displaced in a locking direction, into a first range of first cam movement, (during which displacement the operating slide may remain substantially o 5 unmoved or it mnay be displaced); this first range being characterized by the o operating slide being unable to be displaced to displace the first cam, and the first O cam in effect locking the operating slide in the operative configuration to be oc immoveable by actuation of the push this configuration corresponding to a first 0 locked configuration of the lock.
The components are preferably configured such that when the operating slide is in the operative position and the first cam is in the first range of movement, the point of contact of the peripheral surface on the operating slide is defined by a normal vector that passes though the pivotal axis of the first cam. In some embodiments, the locking shoulder is connected to an inclined surface 134 (also referred to as an exist shoulder) that is configured such that when the lack is in the first locked configuration the inclined surface is substantially defined by a normal vector that passes substantially though the pivotal axis of the first cam so that the peripheral surface of the cam can slide over the inclined surface without, or without substantially, displacing the operating slide that remains in cooperation with the engaging member.
When the lock is in the first locked configuration, It Is desirable that -it be biased against displacement from that configuration and/or require the exertion of a predetermined force or torque to do so and when the cam arm is in the cam recess 24 it is desirable that it be biased against displacement from recess and/or require the exertion of a predetermined force or torque to do so both these objectives are achieved by the inclusion of a torsion slide spring 136. The slide spring is supported in a cylindrical recess 137 in a side of the operating slide below the drive recess as shown in the Figures 2 to 4 with the cylindrical coiled portion disposed about an axis that is orthogonal the sides of the casings. The spring has a spring arm 138 that extends rearwardly to intersect the locus of movement of the peripheral end of the first cam arm and a fixed end 139 that is restrained within a tangential slotted aperture 140. The spring arm 30 lies in plane shared by the lock body and first cam, (a plane parallel to the plane of a casing side) and between the two sides. SIn some forms, there is an angularly displaceable biasing cam 141 that has o an arm 142 that extends rearwardly in the casing to overlap the operating slide, the 00 arm has a sideways protruding shoulder preferably comprising a pinned protrusion O 143 at its free end that overlaps the operating slide to locate within a substantially LC< 10 orthoginall slot 144 in a side of the operating slide. The locking cam in some forms is supported by opposed cylindrical side protrusions 145 that are received one in each of a pair of opposed circular recesses 146 in the side walls of the casing. Slot 36 supports a compression spring 147 that is held compressed between the pin protrusion of a slave rocker arm and a forward wall 149 of the slot 36 and the lock is configured such that when the operating slide is undisplaced, the pinned protrusion lies on or further removed from the engaging member than the point of intersection of the normal to the locus of the operating slide that intersects the pivotal axis of the push cam, so that when the operating slide is displaced to the operative configuration, the spring exerts a force on the slide that has a component to urge the operating slide from being displaced from the operative configuration.
In locks having a control plunger and cylinder, the second locked configuration is characterized by the operating slide being in the operative configuration, the first cam being in the drive recess, the bolt/s being extended and the control plunger being retracted and the first locked configuration is characterized by the operating slide being in the operative configuration, the first cam being withdrawn from the drive recess, the bolt/s being extended and the control plunger being retracted.
