କପା ବାକାର୍ପାସ ହେଉଛି ଏକ ଗୁଳ୍ମ ଜାତୀୟ ସପୁଷ୍ପକ ଉଦ୍ଭିଦ। ଏହାର ଉତ୍ପତ୍ତି ଆଫ୍ରିକା ଓ ଆରବ ଦେଶ ବୋଲି ଅନୁମାନ କରାଯାଏ। ଏହା ପ୍ରଥମେ ପଶ୍ଚିମ ସୁଦାନରେ ଚାଷ କରାଯାଇଥିଲା। ପରେ ଏହା ଭାରତକୁ ଆସିଥିଲା। ଚୀନ ଦେଶରେ ୭୦୦ ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟାବ୍ଦରେ ଏହା ପହଂଚିଥିଲା ଓ ସେବେଠାରୁ ସେଠାରେ ଏହାକୁ ଚାଷ କରା ଯାଉଛି।

ଏହି ଗଛର ଫଳ ଭିତରେ ତନ୍ତୁମୟ ଏକ ପଦାର୍ଥ ରହିଥାଏ ଯାହା ଭିତରୁ କଳା ରଙ୍ଗର ମଞ୍ଜି ବାହାରେ। ଏହି ତନ୍ତୁଜାତୀୟ ପଦାର୍ଥକୁ ହିଁ କପା କୁହାଯାଇଥାଏ। ଏହି ତନ୍ତୁରୁ ପୋଷାକ ପତ୍ର ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ ହୁଏ ଓ ମଞ୍ଜିରୁ ଖାଦ୍ୟୋପଯୋଗୀ ତେଲ ବାହାରିଥାଏ ।[୨]
