Yaka (Yiyáká)

Yaka is a Bantu language spoken by about 900,000 people mainly in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and northern Angola. In the DRC, Yaka is spoken particularly in Kwango Province between the Kwango and Wamba rivers.

Yaka is also known as Iyaka, Iaca or Kiyaka. Yaka speakers call their languageYiyáká. There are two dialects: Yaka proper and Ngoongo. It is written with the Latin alphabet, and there is a translation of the Bible in the language.

Consonants followed by w are labialized, e.g. kw [kʷ], and consonants followed by y are palatalized. e.g. by [bʲ].
