Omniglot - the online encyclopedia of writing systems & languages

Uma

Uma is a member of the Celebic branch of Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by about 20,000 people along the Lariang River in the provinces of Central Sulawesi and South Sulawesi in central Indonesia. The majority of Uma speakers can be found in the Kulawi district of the Donggala Regency in the southwest of Central Sulawesi. The are also Uma speakers in the city of Palu, the Gimpu and Palolo valleys, and in the Seko District in the North Luwu Regency of South Sulawesi.

Uma is known as Pipikoro, which means "banks of the Koro (Lariang) River". Dialects include Bana, Benggaulu, Aria, Tobaku, Tolee' and Winatu. It is written with the Latin alphabet, and there appear to be several spelling systems.

Ria hadua ana tomane doko' mpobehi teko'. Na'ala' ui haminee' pai' nanai. Oti mponai ui, pai' na'ala' wo'o walo binee' hamika'. Na'ala' ui to oti nanai, napataka' hi walo to nabinee'. Ba tolu mata-miki, pai' hiloui mpopali' ohea danei. Nahilo mopata damo laa' ngkasipa'. Na'ala'mi teko'na, pai'nata'a. Ka'otina nata'a, napalahiimi hilou hi tomi.

Translation

There was a boy who intended to make a trap. He took rattan and then shaved it. After he finished shaving the rattan, he took a piece of bamboo. Then he attached the shaved rattan to the bamboo. After he finished making three snares, he set off to find a place where birds passed. As soon as he found the path of the ngkasipa' bird, he took the snare and attached it to the path of the ngkasipa' bird
