Bube (Böbë)

Bube is a Bantu language spoken by about 51,000 people mainly on Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea, where it is officially recognised as a minority language There are also speakers of Bube in Río Muni in the Continental Region of Equatorial Guina, and in Gabon and southern Cameroon. Bube contains many loanwords from English and Spanish, and many Bube speakers also speak English, Spanish or Portuguese.

Bube is also known as Bubi, Bohobé, Bube–Benga or Fernandian (Bobe). Bioko Island was formerly known as Fernando Po,Fernando Pó in Portuguese, orFernando Poo in Spanish. It was named after Fernão do Pó, a 15th century Portuguese navigator. In Bube it is known asËtulá a Ëri. Bube is spoken mainly by the Bubi people, and also by the Wovea people. Dialects of Bube include Rebola, Basile, Banapa, Basupa and Bakake.

Bube was first documented in the 1840s by John Clarke, an Baptist missionary from England. It is written with the Latin alphabet.
